Guest guest
Hi Shelia; Yes, we have been through it. It ended up being an exacerbation that required IV antibitics to bring under control. I wouldn't jump to that conclusion after just one day, but wanted you to know that others have been through it and one way or another it can be resolved. To keep all the meds straight, make a weekly chart with all the daily meds listed in order and check them off as given. Or, just get a notebook, attach a pen to it, and write a notation about the time and the name of the med every time something is given. It helps with the " didn't we or didn't we give that? " or the " What time did you have your last [whatever med]? " All the best to Blake. M spoofandu wrote: >My son Blake (11) woke up this early a.m. with an AWFUL cough. A non- >stop cough! Guest guest
I am sorry to hear about the cough. My son who is 5 has had this happen a few times this year and a bunch last year. Along with the Albut. or xoponex, pulmozyme and TOBI, he used to use flovent and now pulmicort. It def. makes a difference with those kinds of coughs. Also and oral steroid really does the trick. The other thing that sometimes helps is a neb. with just saline. It is very difficult to watch them go through that - even once they get rid of some junk, their airway is still so tight. As far as the atrovent and Robitussin DM - I would check with the cf clinic or pulmonologist. Quite often our pediatrician will tell us to use something that is not appropriate for someone with cf. I hope he is able to rest and feeling better soon. Take Care!

Being new to CF parenting, what is an exacerbation? Perhaps it's a bug going around. Only thing that helped my son was from the tickle cough was sucking on ice chips. His cough is far less frequent now, " wetter " sounding than it was before and he almost chokes after a spell. Is this what a CF cough sounds like? Until now we've never experienced pulmonary issues with my son before. His problems had been constant sinus infections and polyps. jan
Guest guest
Shelia, Sorry to hear Blake is going through a rough spot. We have been through this type of thing too. Maureen 12 and Jack 2, we have used Robitussin DM too and if that does not help within 48 hours we normally do a 5 day course of Prednisone. That seems to open up things much more even working with the other inhaled nebs. Is he on any inhaled steroids? Guest guest
Once again, ask your doc for some REAL cough syrup with codiene. ONLY to take at nighttime and ONLY when its a nonstop cough. I know docs do not like to prescribe codiene but it really works like magic as far as this kind of nonstop cough goes. At least thats been our experience. It also tastes terrible so he won't want to take it unless he REALLY needs it. Good luck. Oh and if the robitussin DM is working , disregard.
