Guest guest
Hello, there. I'm afraid I can't give you any definite information but I can tell you that I have had bouts of bad abdominal pain since I was about 5 years old. Even though my mother had the same disease, for complicated reasons (my symptoms were different from hers, and I was fine in between attacks)I have only had my diagnosis this year as the condition is progressing. I'm now 57! My specialist, who specialises in the pancreas and has a particular interest in hereditary pancreatic diseases, has said it is familial in my case. They are still looking to find the specific gene mutation but have not yet found it. As you probably know, there are some mutations which are either more difficult and time-consuming to test for or which have not actually been discovered yet. Some of my tests are now going to continue at Pittsburgh; I actually live in Liverpool, UK! Apparently the two universities work closely together on this. However, I do know that pancreatitis can also be idiopathic, ie. no specific cause is ever found. There are also other, less common causes and conditions which can result in pancreatitis. In any case, I just wanted to offer you and your son my sympathy as I know just how painful this condition can be, and wish you the very best of luck in your search for more information. I'm sure someone who has a child with pancreatitis will post a message. Best wishes. Felicity Brown
