He said I need to take the Nexium (or simular med) to turn of the proton pumps because when taking the pancrease enzymes, they will not work properly if you have too much stomach acid. , Maureen, It is true that if you are taking a non-enteric coated enzyme, like Viokase, that you need to take an antiacid BEFORE taking the enzymes, otherwise a person's stomach acid will interfere with the enzymes' progression to the small intestine and they (the enzymes) will not be effective. Yet if you are taking an enteric coated enzyme like Ultrase, Lipram or Pancrelipase, an antiacid is NOT necessary, as the enteric coated enzymes are encased in a special gel capsule which is designed not to break down until they reach the intestine. Any antiacid will work, my doctor recommended Zantac for the short time I took Viokase. I prefer the enteric coated enzymes and don't need antiacids to take beforehand.
