Paints,

I agree with what Heidi was saying in regards to everyone having a

different threshold for pain. I think the most important thing I do with

myself and my son is that we are not ever alone when experiencing an attack.

That way, if you get into trouble...someone is there to help you get to the

hospital or is able to make rational decisions in case your pain or attack

escalate quickly.

I know I have laid (lain, layed......go figure?) in the exact same position

from the time my husband went to the office until the time he got in at 8 PM

that evening. I know that isn't one the the better decisions I made, so I

now try to at least let my mom know I am having an attack ( and I HATE

bringing my folks into the picture) so she calls me or walks over (they live

adjacent to our property) a couple of times a day to make sure I am still

" among the living " as she calls it.

My son's dr said as long as we can deal with his pain at home....and he

doesn't have an acute attack lasting longer than 4 days, then she said the

hospital is not necessary. But you have to know...he is only 10, but is 5'1 "

tall and is 109 lbs. Nice big 'un, as we call him in TX. So he has alot to

draw on when he " goes down " . If he was a tiny little ol' scrawny thing, I

most likely wouldn't try to get him through his attacks at home. But with

the next-to-impossible needle-in-the-vein for IV thing going on, he is HAPPY

to try and get through it without the drs and ER routine. His dr was only

concerned after the 4th day due to possible dehydration issues, but I must

tell you this also - he only vomits because of pain. Once we get pain meds

(usually darvocet when at home) in him...his vomiting stops and dehydration

isn't a big concern.......now if I could only make them understand this in

the ER when we DO go....(arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!)

I hope this gives you something helpful in some way....sorry to ramble~
