Leah, I had surgery a week after you. I don't really have a " typical " day

of eating. Your menu sounds yummy! I avoid juice after years with Diabetes

and not drinking it, but would love to. It also is high on potassium that I

can't have. I've been eating cottage cheese for breakfast. It's got twice

the protein that the yogurt has and almost twice what an egg has. Sometimes

I'll put some fruit on it, and love it with diced tomatoes. Lunch, and

snacks I grab what's handiest. I keep deli turkey around as I love it, and

cheeses. The string cheese is supposed to be the lowest fat, but it doesn't

often taste like anything. I love swiss cheese. I just bought some

fat-free american that I haven't tried yet. I buy grilled chicken strips

from Costco, all ready to eat, and freeze them in small packages so I can

add them to lunch. I have tried all sorts of fruits and vegetables, and all

agree with me. Someone mentioned the spaghetti squash on here, so I bought

that so I can make spaghetti for the guys, and I won't have to have the

noodles. Dinner-wise I eat whatever I've made the guys for dinner. Granted

they're much healthier meals than in the past. If there's something I

should stay clear of, I leave it. I know though that I'm not getting enough

protein, and have to look harder at my totals. I'm not fond of fish, but I

plan on having tuna tomorrow. I have a dessert once in awhile, sugar-free

pudding with fat-free milk. It seems to digest so great, and I justify it

with the fact that milk has some protein. haha I also snack on sunflower

seeds and nuts. I had a tangerine tonight, and it was sooooo yummy.

It's really tough to compare your weight loss with anybody else. We're all

so different. The exercise is a very important part. It keeps the weight

loss going much better. You look like you're doing great with your weight

loss, and if you don't feel it's enough, just think back to " before " when a

2# loss was great in a week.

As to fluids, I keep changing. For awhile water seems really good, then I

switch to something else. Went through the Crystal Light, then many others,

and lately hot lemon decaf tea is wonderful. I don't like iced tea, but had

some in town the other day and it tasted pretty good.

Calling all 5 week post-oppers!

I would like to hear from folks that had surgery about the same time

I did and compare my diet and weight loss to theirs. (or from those

who remember what they ate and their weight loss at 5 wks out) I

realize everyone is different, I would just like to have an idea how

others are doing and what their eating. My surgery was 11/11/03.

I've lost 29 lbs. I'm not losing as fast as I'd like, but I think

it's because I haven't been walking like I should. This is a

typical day for me.

Morning: Glass of orange juice first thing. Then maybe 1/2 hour or

so later, scrambled egg with salsa or refried beans and cheese and

salsa. (not a big egg eater!)

Lunch: 1/2 can Wolf Gang Puck Chicken Tortilla soup. (very good)

Supper: Baked Tilapia or chicken with green beans. Sometimes turkey

chilli.

I may snack on some cheese or lowfat, low salt peanut butter on a

couple of crackers. I also struggle to get in enough fluids. I get

tired of water all the time and drink a lot of decaf iced tea

sweetened with Splenda.

Please share your experiences with me.

One more thing, I would like to try some sugarfree gum, but I'm

terrified of accidently swallowing it. I haven't read or heard

anything about it, I just assume that my pouch couldn't handle gum.

Yea, I know what it means to assume.

Thank you!

Leah, You sound like you are really doing good. I am 8 weeks post

op and also feel my weight loss is slow. I have lost 38 pounds. But

stop and think what it was like to try and lose weight before

surgery. I looked back at my last weight watchers attempt. It took

me 7 months to lose 28 pounds. I have also made turkey chili. that

is quite tasty. I have made an omlet with 1 egg ham and cheese. I

eat cheese and nuts chewed up fine. Ihave also had chicken fajitas,

Chicken Qusadeas, plain chicken. Just tried a raw carrot for the

first time yesterday, I was a little nauseated after, but it stayed

down fine. Happy Holidays

, I'm jumping for joy right now and writing it down. Sugar-free

cocoa. I never bothered to look to see if they had one, just avoided it.

That sounds wonderful in the evening! Wonder if they have decaf chocolate

like they do coffee and tea??

And 64#, WOW. Congratulations!!!!!

Leah,

I had surgery on 11/12/03. I've lost 35 lbs and typically eat a scambled

egg for breakfast, tuna or turkey for lunch, and chicken with a vegetable

for dinner. Sometimes I have a snack of string cheese or a sugar free

popsicle/fudgesicle. I've eaten a variety of different things on a case by

case basis as the situation arose, just always stayed in my doctor's range

of 1-2 oz of protein, 1oz vegetable. Not eating many carbs at all. I held

at a loss of 27 lbs for about 4 days and was panicked, but then for some

reason I lost like 3 lbs in one day. Don't be discouraged, 29 lbs in 5

weeks is incredible. My primary drinks are water and Crystal Light

Rasberry Tea. We're doing great! :-)

Ok ok, not this week, I've been bad and am wholy undeserving. But its

funny, and I must share this with you.... that one day when you acknowledged

even

my one lb loss .. my heart went " flip flip " like a little kid.

You are such a gracious and always giving .cheer leader Joan. Thank you for

that.

A quick note regarding your impass with your Mom. I could exchange volumes

on this subject, how it has effected me personally, my children etc. I

applaud your resolve to ... mend things ... for yourself. You are fully

deserving

of " peace " regardless of who things turn out. You simply cannot control

other people ... end of story. A huge hug to you.

I think it's so great to see big weight losses, but we've all got to

remember that we have different metabolism, different bodies. What one

person loses, another one doesn't. Try to keep your eye more on yourself

and your accomplishment so far. Thirty-four pounds in great, great,

great!!!! For those that lost quite a bit of weight prior to surgery, their

weight loss isn't as big. A friend lost 40# prior to surgery, and had her

surgery 2 weeks before I did, but our weight loss is about the same. It

doesn't discourage her though. She knows she lost the " easier " weight prior

to surgery. And the heavier you are, the weight seems to come off faster.

We need to applaud those that lose 5# and those that lost 50#. They both

worked hard for it.

Mandy, I'd cheer you or anyone who lost 1/4#. Any weight loss is a

struggle. In the other world outside surgery, no one would ever think that

a tiny loss is a loss and to be celebrated. I'm sure we've all gone through

the cycle over and over, lose, gain, lose, gain. At this point I'm sure

it's really hard for you being at goal, or close. The weight doesn't come

off overnight, and your stomach is bigger. Then is when the real struggle

happens. I can only hope that when I get to where you are I can keep it off

for 6 YEARS!!!! Have you settled into a true body image of yourself and how

good you look? I wonder if after so many years of feeling fat at times,

whether I'll be able to truly see myself as thin or normal consistently.

And oh yes.....those who have or had conflicts with mothers! It's a tough

one, but necessary to keep peace in the family. I just keep a daily resolve

to not let there be any " crazymaking " with me. Crazymaking comes from a

book I read umpteen years ago by a german. When the insanity starts, and

those horrible and crazy requests come to me, I can finally say no. I

refuse to speak to them at all about past problems, as they haven't the

capacity to understand......and many of sisters/brothers have acknowledged

that they too went through the same problems. They just can't face up to it

and deal with it. So they muddle through with false lives, denying the

past. If that works for them, okay. At least this is one part of my life

that I've conquered and it is sooooo empowering. Hope I can do as well with

the weight. I guess in one way these 2 things are alike.....to get past

them you have to acknowledge it first, then work very hard, and most of all

protect and love yourself!!

on this subject, how it has effected me personally, my children etc. I

applaud your resolve to ... mend things ... for yourself. You are fully

deserving

of " peace " regardless of who things turn out. You simply cannot control

other people ... end of story. A huge hug to you.

Mandy, thanks! It does feel great. Took a long time, but has been so worth

it. I hope to apply these things to my quest with food.

I've heard others talk of being sabotaged by friends, family. Yes, there is

truly a jealousy that you're doing this for yourself. Yesterday had an

email from a fellow GB friend. She'd been in town with a friend that kept

trying to get her to eat something. The friend then insisted on going to a

particular hamburger place, which would not have been good for the GB

friend. Upon more insistence, and driving quite a distance, the friend

wolfed down 2 big hamburgers, then tried to get the GB friend to eat the

last bite. I could hear the frustration in her email, that this friend just

doesn't get it, does not hear anything you're saying. I guess it goes back

to many of our roots, that food is comfort, food is friendly, that you want

someone else to enjoy it. I've got my resolve up, because I know I'll be

faced with this at some point, and politely let them know " NO " . I figure

even though they feel they're helping you, they aren't. If they can't hear

your words when you say " NO " , and the fact that you've told them many times

what you need and don't need, I won't even hear them after that. Way too

many years of not being heard, makes me cautious of those that don't think

of what is right for you, and try bulldozing you over, even in the name of

love. I know this is different for everyone, but for me this will work.

Okay, that's it, felt good to get it out! On my way to the movies and have

a good time.
