Guest guest
Hi all. Thank each and every one of you for your honest expressions. I have been approved for surgery and am now in the process of getting all of my ducks in a row. Here is my situation. My husband and I have two children, a 10 year old and a 2 year old " special needs " child. My hospital is 3 1/2 hours away and my hubby just started a new job and can't take much time off at all. My mom has offered to come from Wisconsin to help me out (I'm in Florida) but I want her to come when it is most beneficial. I will be in the ICU for the first 24 hours and discharged home two or three days later if all goes well. Hubby will probably be there the day of surgery, but with all the nurses available (even if they are short staffed) and being doped up on pain meds and not really feeling like visiting, is it worth it to have someone there with me during my hospital stay? Since mom can only stay for a few days, would it be better for her to help me out when I get home? Any input is appreciated! Thanks, Maureen

Guest guest
I sent my hubby home. I was so tired and doped up I just could not visit and I didn't want to feel like I had to " entertain " . So I would say have her there when you get home. I would not even have hubby wait for you during surgery, unless you wanted him to. At my hospital they did not let you see family (or anyone) after you went in to be prepped. So I insisted my hubby go home. I had the doc call him at home when it was all over. He came back that night but after about 10 minutes I wanted to go to sleep and back home he went. We live 90 minutes from the hospital and so I told him to just call once in a while and not keep driving there. I was so out of it I didn't even know he was there..when he was there. Guest guest
Maureen, are you having open or lap surgery? I had lap and did fine the day after taking care of myself, but 2 kids are quite a different thing. Do you have someone to watch them while you're in the hospital? Even with lap surgery, I'm not supposed to lift over 20# for 6 weeks. It's so hard when a little one expects you to pick them up. I would have been fine without visitors. I really just wanted to sleep. I wished they'd go home. But everyone is different. I think you need to decide when you need the help with the children most. When is your surgery? Guest guest
/Maureen...I have an 8 and 4 year old...my hubby just came to visit me in the hospital and bring the kids for a little while each day, but we live 15 minutes from the hospital. For me, I got home on a Thursday and my hubby had to work on Friday, so my eight year old stayed home and helped me with my younger child. Since I could not do a whole lot, she helped get him cereal, and made pb & j, and then my hubby took over for the next 2 days. I would recommend help for at least 3 or four days after you come home. The pain is not unbearable, but I was tired and needed stuff like water and chicken broth, and it was nice to be waited on. Yep, that's my remembrance of the situation...don't remember much from the hospital, except being bored and ready to go home...good luck and i hope this helps... Guest guest
Hi Maureen, I had my surgery on 11/18/03. My mom and husband was with me the day of surgery. I was also in ICU the first 24 hours. I had my surgery on a tuesday and was released on Thursday. No one was with me during the day on wednesday. My hubby came after work and spent the night with me on Wednesday night and got up to go back to work bright and early Thursday morning. Thursday I was also alone. When it was time for me to be discharged they gave me time to call my mom to come pick me up to bring me home. She was 45 minutes away. Once I got home I stayed at my moms a couple of days so she could help me with my now 3 yr old daughter. Her bday was sunday....I had lap RNY and came home with a drain tube...I had to keep the tube for a week and once i got it out i immediatly felt 200% better. Good luck to you and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.
