Guest guest
Dear Keri, You sure must be getting tired of the hospital, it seems you've spend more time in there than out! I know what you mean about having been pushed off the cliff into full diabetes, in case you don't know my history, that's exactly what happend to me when I had an attack of diabetic ketoacidosis in March. I wasn't a diabetic (on record that is), when I went to the emergency room with DKA, but when I was released 4 days later I was a type 1 brittle diabetic. It was an unbelievable shock! What was your diagnosis? Type 1 or Type 2. Is there any chance of you controlling this with diet and pills, or are you having to use insulin? Do you have an endocrinologist, yet, or what is the specialty of this " new " doc that you've gained? I had hopes for a pancreatectomy with auto islet transfer, too....kept thinking that would be an option for the future, when I was ready, when the pain got worse, etc. Seems I waited too long. It sounds as though the pancreatectomy may be something they would approve for you if there's any question of pancreatic cancer. I know what you mean about just being without your " litte friend " ......doesn't seem to be much purpose in keeping it if it doesn't function, and all is does is serve as a collection point for further disease and/or cancer. I'd love to talk to you at length about this, since we seem to be heading in the same direction in this regard, so maybe you could write to me off the board about it? You're fortunate that you have a relative that can watch over your children, but then again, know that you would much rather see and end to all the hospitalizations and be able to have more time with your kids. This procedure might be the stepping stone to seeing that become a real possiblity, other than a just a wish that you have no control over. I'm glad to see you home and I'm sure your little ones are, too. Write and let us know about how you are doing now. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. This attack seems to have pushed me over the cliff into full on diabetes. Hope for a pancreatectomy with islet cell transplant seems lost. I did meet a new (good) doctor. He has sent other patients to Dr Sutherland in Minnesota, wants to refer me, we'll see if it truly is too late. Even if that is the case he seems very positive about my chances at a pseudo-normal life with just a pancreatectomy. He says I should be " very concerned about the future possibility of panc cancer with my past history " Keri Beck RN
