Guest guest
Joan, polycystic kidneys is an inherited disease. Erma Bombeck died from it. My father died from it, and each of my kids has a 50% chance of getting it. It doesn't effect me much now, except for being on a low protein and salt restricted diet. But I have a 50% chance or so of having kidney failure by late middle age. That is one reason I need to get this weight off... Guest guest
Janice, I'm so sorry to hear the statistics. I didn't know that's what Erma died from. She wasn't very old. Do the kidneys need low protein? If so, how does it work for you with the high protein that is mostly suggested? I bet you feel as I do about my kids. Everyone on my dad's side of the family has Diabetes. Not one of us escaped it. Strike #1, Several of my mom's side have/had it. And 2 of my siblings, and nephew have it. My daughter is 24, and already during pregnancy she was having trouble with sugar, as I did in my 20's. The best I've found to do, is make sure the kids know the risks, know the things they can do in their health to hopefully stave it off or slow it down. So, getting the weight off will help you?? 2 years ago when I started having problems, the doctor said 10 years. But with the surgery and weight loss, he said it can be slowed down. Have a Merry Christmas with your family. Joan LAP RNY 11/18/03 Dr. Higa, Fresno, CA 282pre-op/275surg/243/140 Re: Update and Question/Joan Joan, polycystic kidneys is an inherited disease. Guest guest
thanks Joan, and Merry Christmas to you and your family. My protein restriction is about 65 grams, so I'm hoping it will work with the wls. Once I get an appointment to talk to the doctor that is one of the things we will talk about. Most people think Erma died from Cancer, but it was her kidneys. She refused to let her celebrity status move her up the list for kidney transplant. Guest guest
Janice, the amount of protein doctors and nutritionists want varies widely. I follow what I was told which right now is around 50gm a day, and later the optimum would be 75gm. They had me follow the 75 gm for months before the surgery, so I'd be more ready. I recently asked the surgeon's assistant about the difference in protein they prescribe, as evidenced by this group. She said different doctors. I questioned it further and she said the surgery itself had a lot to do with it.....the more intestine bypassed, the higher protein need. These doctors practice somewhere between 9 " -12 " of bypassed intestine. They decided to keep it a minimal level to stay away from malabsorbtion problems. Be armed with your questions when you see the doctor. Guest guest
I realize that this comment is a bit off topic but as a transplant coordinator and donor family member I can assure each and every one of you that NO ONE can use their celebrity status to 'bump themselves up " on the transplant list in America.
