Guest guest
Hey Matt- I had lower surgery in May (3 1/2 months ago) and don't worry...it will get better. The first week or two are the worst! : ( Then you'll start feeling better. I was wired for 7 weeks...liquid food only. Regarding your irritated tongue: I rinsed with warm salt water and hydrogen peroxide and it cleared up. I think you could possibly have a yeast infection (I know, sounds gross) in your mouth...the salt water really helps. But, of course, check with your doctor first. I am definitely a doctor. Also, if you're not eating anything you could be dehydrated/malnourished...you should check with your doc. You need all your strength and nutrition for the bones to heal. I didn't take any pain medicine after the first 4 days, because I thought it made me groggy. I really wasn't in " pain, " more like " discomfort " from being swollen/wired. But if you're still in pain you might want to check with your surgeon. This too, shall pass. ragingfire101 wrote: Hey this is matt, i had upper and lower on aug 3.....cant talk much bc im so dizzy, just anyone else had here after surgery a swollen like throat? i feel i cant swallow......alot of mucus.....back of throat all puffy...and my tongue is all cut up and irritated, someone please help!! Guest guest
matt, your throat is probably sore from the intubation as was mine. they shove a tube in your nose down your throat so you can breath. they close off the throat to keep you from swallowing blood during surgery.my whole neck was discolored for about a week from whatever they did to immobilize me. the pain should pass soon. as for an upset stomach try yogurt with live active cultures to calm it down and replace what the antibiotics kill. from what i hear most of the stomach problems come from the type of pain meds. you should be able to go without them by now but if not ask your doc to change them. I had liquid hydrocodone and after the first few days only took a little before bed so i could sleep with the sore throat. hang in there bud it only gets easier from here. eric > Hey this is matt, i had upper and lower on aug 3.....cant talk much > bc im so dizzy, just anyone else had here after surgery a swollen > like throat? i feel i cant swallow......alot of mucus.....back of > throat all puffy...and my tongue is all cut up and irritated, someone > please help!! Guest guest
Hey Matt, I hope things get better for you..I'm having a similar surgery to yours next Thursday - upper and lower - and will also have my jaw wired for 6-8 weeks. Hopefully the worst of your pains will go away by the time I have mine. Good luck! -jane > Hey this is matt, i had upper and lower on aug 3.....cant talk much > bc im so dizzy, just anyone else had here after surgery a swollen > like throat? i feel i cant swallow......alot of mucus.....back of > throat all puffy...and my tongue is all cut up and irritated, someone > please help!! Guest guest
Matt-- I'm so sorry to hear that you are feeling so badly. I was too for the first 10 days (had lower jaw surgery on July 15th and am wired/banded shut for 6 weeks) but then it got dramatically better. Yes, I had a swollen REALLY sore throat due to the tube and that did subside by 10 days or so. I drank cool drinks to help with the pain. I also got my OS to prescribe liquid ibuprophen (aleve) and that really helped with the sore throat pain. The problem was it tastes so bad that if you are nauseous I wouldn't recommend it right now. Re: the nausea, I had that too. I got my OS to prescribe phenergan, it made me drowsy but took care of the nausea really quickly -- you know, the lesser of two evils. Also, once I got used to a liquid diet my stomach settled down. Try to take in something every 2 or 3 hours before you start feeling nauseous. If you can take in flat ginger ale that helped for me and just try sipping soothing things often cold works better than warm to prevent nausea. After you get over the nausea, then make sure you eat frequently to prevent you getting it again. pain meds: Pain medication often also contributes to the nausea. I stopped taking the tylenol w/codeine. Your email reminded me of exactly how I felt 2-3 weeks ago and I thought I couldn't do this, but you can, you really can. The first 10 days were really bad but then it does get better and you do get used to a liquid diet. My diet one month out consists of a protein shake in the morning, baby oatmeal w/brown sugar and fortified milk for an a.m. snack, fruit juices/gatorade throughout the day, lots of water, applesauce, pureed fruits, pudding for snacks and pureed soup, mashed potatoes for dinner. Not a huge variety by all means, but just keep in mind IT'S ONLY TEMPORARY!!!! Hang in there, 10 days is tomorrow!
