I don't know about post op, but in general, braces shouldn't stop you

from getting a cleaning.

I'm still pre-op, and my dentist has had me coming in every 3 months

for cleanings instead of 6 while I have braces just to keep things as

clean as possible.

My OS told me to wait at least 3 months before getting my teeth

cleaned so that my bones are fully healed and I can open my mouth

wide enough for them to get in there and clean.

The bones heal after about 6-8 weeks, but you'll likely have trouble

holding your mouth open wide enough or long enough for a decent

cleaning. I think I went at about 3 months post-op as well, which

another poster said.

When I got braces, my hygienist started using one of the ultrasonic

cleaning thingies (sorry I don't know the technical term!) - she said

braces do make things more challenging, but not to worry, with all

the extra effort I had made pre-op and was making post-op, I likely

wouldn't have any major problems in that period before I was able to

get a cleaning.

And she was right!

For others: some of the tools I used while in braces (but be careful

what you use post-op, follow your surgeon's recommendations) were

proxybrushes, Floss threaders floss (floss & threader all in one!),

waterpik, and a Sonicare toothbrush. I couldn't stand the Sonicare

post-op (teeth more sensitive and the vibrations were too much to

stand), and I went VERY VERY gently with the waterpik (don't point at

the stitches and keep it on the lowest setting).

Hi PJ,

I had upper/lower on June 2nd and had my teeth cleaned last week on

August 5th with no problem. I'm pretty fortunate as I can open my

mouth pretty wide . . . about 40mm. This is the second time I am in

braces and I too have my teeth cleaned about every three months. As

many have pointed out . . . it is even more important to keep those

pearlie whites clean while in braces. Best wishes to you!

With regards,

Dale

Yes, it is possible to clean with braces. I'm dismayed if you've had

them on any amount of time and haven't been getting regular

cleanings. They're important! (I had to go every two months, but I

build up tartar and plaque as if it were part of my job as a

construction worker.)

Can you keep your mouth wide enough open, though, and long enough.

I'm sure the hygienist can help, in any case. But that can be an

obstacle.

Hi , Regarding this post you made..... are you ever able to use

higher than the lowest setting on the waterpik? I used it once, the

night before my surgery, on the 2nd setting, but of course, since

surgery, have only used on lowest setting. even the 2nd setting at

this stage (7 wks) is too hard, that along with numbness and

tingling and all sorts of sensations going on in there. It simply

seems like the other settings on the waterpik could cut diamonds!
