Guest guest
I had my elastics on all the time until the week after surgery. After that, I could take them off to ingest food, but with the understanding that I would have them on for as much time as possible. I think the factor the surgeon looks at is how your teeth mate together after the surgery. If the new bite fits exceptionally well, then the elastics really aren't needed. If not, the elastics guide your bite into the place its supposed to be. -Tony P.S. My ortho actually has me wearing elastics right now for the whole month of August. They aren't as rigid as the post-op ones (in fact, I often eat with them on). > Hi, I had surgery on upper and lower jaw to correct an open bite and > a crooked jaw on Aug. 4. Guest guest
I was only banded for 2 weeks, I also had a splint wired to my top teeth, since then I have been completely free. Guest guest
Marsha, sorry to hear all is not going well with yur alignment. If it's any consolation I'm also going through alignment problems. I'm 11 weeks post MMA (upper and lower) for sleep apnea. My apnea is gone howeverI can no longer eat properly. I was banded for 8 weeks. The day before my 6 week appointment when the bands and screws were to be removed I took them off to see what my bite would look like. In 24 hours it opened up in the front and raised on the right about 4mm. When my OS saw this he had me wear the bands for 2 more weeks. After they were removed for good my bite started to shift again. I now only touch on the left rear molar and have about 5mm open in the front. I go back in on monday so I'll see what he has to say but I already know he's going to tell me I need another operation. I've yet to get a straight answer as to the purpose of the bands. I think they hold and retrain your jaws into their new position. They are only designed to maintain slight corrections as joint pain results if they need to hold them too far from where they really should be. From what I've read your condyles (tmj's which allow your jaws to move up,down, forward and back) need to be centered in their sockets (fossa) before the jaws are rigidly fixed with the screws and plates. If not as they try to recenter themselves your jaws will shift. The bands can hold them into their new position as the muscles overcome the condyles desire to recenter. If the condyles are too far out of center you will end up with joint pain, misalignment, or both. It sounds to me like you were taken off the bands too soon if your misalignment is minor. As far as being able to open your mouth, when the jaw is moved forward the muscle is streched and needs to be excercised to get back to full opening. I don't expect my OS to admit he screwed up but I'm torn as to whether I should go to another OS or get the original doc to fix it for free! needless to say I'm slightly pissed off. Good luck on your next appointment and hopefully you can just start wearing the bands again. If anyone else knows anything about this I would appreciate any input. thx/ > > Hi, I had surgery on upper and lower jaw to correct an open bite > and > > a crooked jaw on Aug. 4. Guest guest
Your doc is really the person to answer this question for you. But what individual surgeons do varies widely from doctor to doctor, and from one procedure to another. I was not banded, nor wired, when I left the hospital after a lower advancement. I did have a wired in splint, though. I know others who had light banding and no splint. I'd want to do whatever my surgeon had found worked best for him. Guest guest
Hi-- You know, that's a great question and something I've wanted to ask ever since I had my surgery done. I had my lower jaw set back 5 mm on July 15th and I was wired for 2 weeks and then tightly banded meaning lots of rubber bands about 25-30 for 4 more weeks. 6 weeks total banded/wired. He said rubber bands would help my bite fall into place though I still don't know why he needed so many when others on the discussion board seemed to only have like 2-3. I also asked my OS about banding and why so different. He said it depends on the surgeon's preference primarily and the surgical operation performed. He admits that he is very conservative and a " worst case scenario " person. I had a vertical ramus osteotomy and because it was on my lower jaw he banded me shut for 6 weeks. The lower jaw apparently is a very vulnerable joint (more vulnerable than the upper jaw) so often people who have their lower jaw set back are banded for a longer period of time (I guess). Anyway, I have my four week checkup this afternoon with the OS and we'll see how it goes. I'm hoping he will at least reduce the number of rubber bands. I'll report back later today.
