I had most excellent results with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama --

which probably has nothing to do with others' experiences in

California, as these things vary so much from state to state, and

even from policy to policy.

Your surgeon will be (or should be) your best ally in getting the

insurance companies to cover it.

And I'll leave it to the folks in your area to suggest a surgeon,

although if you do an archive search with Berkeley, and then with

Oakland, you may find some previous recommendations. (I don't

remember anybody writing about Piedmont.) You will probably have to

take the archive search back a ways chronologically, though.

Good wishes and good luck to you.

Thanks! I did an archive search and there were no listings for

Berkeley until my posting (and now your reply as well) :-) The only

listings for Oakland are Kaiser.

Cheers!

One thought. Are you a part of the University of California system?

If so, does your institution have access to the university dental

schools, and is there any interchange between them, if not.

I can remember at least one person who could not handle the dental

school at one of the branches; she liked and respected the surgeon,

but the office staff was sufficiently truculent that she found

another surgeon. That may not still be true, or it may vary greatly

from one to another.

I had my surgery in June by Dr. Chigurupati at UCSF. I would highly

recommend her. She took the time to explain everything to me,

answer all my questions, and was very thorough. My surgery

(upper/lower/genio)was fully covered by Blue Shield. Also, the

surgery was performed at Moffit hospital on the campus, which is the

#7 rated hospital in the nation. The care there was truly

unbelievable. Hope this helps!
