Guest guest
Does anyone know if self-ligating braces alter the surgical plan at all. My new orthodontist told me that these braces are more effective and may not require me to have surgery. I am uneasy with this, however, because every other ortho I've been to said that I would need braces for about a year and then surgery. My only worry is that I may compromise my total treatment. If I'm going to go through with this process, I want the best possible result that I can get, which I imagine would involve surgery. I have an open bite and my chin/lower jaw is off to the right slightly so I don't know how self-ligating braces alone would help this. Thanks for your feedback. Guest guest
a few points: 1. i would avoid surgery at all costs.. why not try non-surgical solution first... i had a 9mm overjet before braces... after about 10months in braces, my overjet was 5mm... i did have the surgery and now have perfect bite; however, i believe i could have been happy with a 5mm overjet .. 2. i wouldn't question your ortho, especially against any advice you find on here... 3. ask your ortho how self-litigating braces will help you avoid the surgery... 4. if your ortho is suggesting a non surgical solution, i think he's a good ortho.. i personally believe surgery should be avoided at all costs.. it's all about risks/rewards... 5. if you want the best results, you may need to go for the surgery, but make sure you weigh the risks/rewards of the surgery... also make sure you understand the laws of diminishing returns... good luck > Does anyone know if self-ligating braces alter the surgical plan at > all. Guest guest
Hey guys -- you know I'm the resident pedant here. But if what you want is " self-litigating braces, " that would mean you want some that file lawsuits! tee-hee! What you mean, I believe, is self-ligating. Meaning they tie the wire in, themselves, without a need for ties, or ligatures... Cammie > > Does anyone know if self-ligating braces alter the surgical plan at > > all. Guest guest
I just started back on this board, reading the older posts after I was told by my ortho yesterday that I still need to have surgery for my open bite, even after 8 months in self-ligating braces. Darn! I was hoping he'd say " No, your bite is fixed and you don't need it after all " ...no such luck. If progress goes well, it looks like I'll be heading for surgery in 4-5 mos. Cheers, Vivian > Does anyone know if self-ligating braces alter the surgical plan at > all. My new orthodontist told me that these braces are more > effective and may not require me to have surgery. Guest guest
self-ligating braces took my overjet from over 10mm to 5mm in less than 10 months! > > Does anyone know if self-ligating braces alter the surgical plan at > > all. Guest guest
Oh yeah, these braces have improved my bite tremendously!! And have even closed my bite considerably....the test being that less of my tongue pokes through my front teeth, lol. But alas, there is a limitation I guess and so my bite is still open, but my teeth are much straighter now. > > > Does anyone know if self-ligating braces alter the surgical plan > at > > > all.
