I just scheduled my upper & lower jaw surgery for next month after

finally getting the green light from my insurance company. I have

an asymetrical jaw; 1/2 inch short on one side.

I am really nervous! I guess I am more concerned with permanent

numbness and of course the pain.

I will be wired for 6 weeks. I am at 115 lbs and don't want to

loose too much weight.

Any encouragement and suggestions for a girl from the hills of

Tennessee?

Many, many folks have these procedures and are really, really glad

they did.

Post op ain't easy. I won't sugar-coat it. I had lower only, and

think it's a much easier road to hoe, and I had a really easy

recovery. Any pain I had was totally manageable with the meds -- and

many people have the same experience.

Be sure you understand what the risks are, and how to deal with being

wired shut. You might investigate the Zipnsqueeze bags. I didn't

really need those, since I was neither wired nor tightly banded, but

I adored the jaw wrap, and still do.

Most people are troubled by swelling and congestion post-op. This

generally decreases after about the first five days -- and some lucky

people have none of it. Most people do have some numbness, sometimes

quite extensive. There's a chance that some numbness or some altered

sensation might be permanent -- your surgeon is also the best one to

advise you about this.

I got out really lucky, with no numbness nor any altered sensation at

all.

I can tell you that for me, the hardest part of the surgery was

worrying about it ahead of time. I have heard others say the same

thing, especialy after that dreaded first five days. You might

prepare yourself, as someone else suggested, with some breathing

exercises, meditation lessons or other things to help you keep your

equilibrium in this time of stress.

I'd wager you'll be fine. And once you're done with all of it and " on

the other side, " you, too, will be delighted!

Best,

Cammie

  • 2 months later...

How did your surgery go. I have an asymetrical jaw to and it seems to

be getting worse. I am just beginning this process. I have no idea if

I will need braces before surgery or only afterwards.

I can lose the weight though lol. Though I probably wont.

Take care

Amazingly enough, most people do not have bad pain with these

procedures, and what they do have is generally controlled well by the

pain meds. The numbness is a real concern, although I didn't have any

after my lower advancement. (One time in my life when I got really

lucky!)

And Pam, I'm sure there are fine surgeons in the hill country of

Tennessee, just as there are in most other areas. Ask lots of

questions, and be sure you have someone you can work with.

I don't envy your being wired for 6 weeks, but when you get

frustrated, remember that lots and lots of people have done it

successfully. Check out the Zip-N-Squeezes, and I'd particularly

recommend their jaw wrap. It has been wonderful -- I used it, and

have loaned mine to several others who were equally enthusiastic.
