Guest guest
Maize Hello all, I am still not able to close my lips at 19 days post op. In fact, they are the same distance open that they were before the surgery. I still have significant swelling around my nose/upper and lower lip area. I am hoping and praying that after all this I will be able to close my lips together while relaxed. I noticed in alot of the pictures online no one had the problem I had. I could not close my mouth at all and showed 10mm of tooth. Anyone else go through this? They had to remove 7mm of bone on the upper jaw and move the lower jaw forward quite a bit. I noticed on the discharge papers the procedure was called the Lefoit I/BSSO did anyone else have this? \ Tammy

Guest guest
I had upper/lower/genio (also known as Leforte 1/BSSO/genio). I couldn't close my lips naturally pre-op. I was worried about the outcome post-op too. Give it more time before you start panicking. If they took that much off your upper jaw and moved your lower forward, it's likely you'll see improvement once the swelling goes away. The initial swelling will reduce, but there will still be residual swelling that can take a long time to go down. One morning I just woke up and my lips were naturally sealed shut (after a life time as a mouth breather). You can see my photos on site 2 under Fiddlesticks folder if you want. Also, ask your surgeon about your concerns. > Maize > > Hello all, > > I am still not able to close my lips at 19 days post op. Guest guest
I had the same surgery you did and but I had Lefort I 2 piece which also included the widening of the pallette. I am 4 weeks post op and my mouth still does not close all the way. My surgeon says if I get the genio done, my lips will meet more. I don't know why he just didn't do it with the rest, but I'm sure it was to make sure I really did need it. Plus I do have a lot of swelling on my upper lip. But my lips definitely meet together way better. Everytime i see the dr. he always tries to talk me into getting it done. Yes, I was also kind of bummed too when my lips didn't meet all the way. That's my situation, but only your dr. will know for sure. Mindy > Maize > > Hello all, > > I am still not able to close my lips at 19 days post op. Guest guest
Hi there, I had a Leforte 1 (one piece) and for many weeks afterwards, I also could not bring my lips together. I was upset and panicked about it too, because when I looked at photos of other patients, no one else seemed to have this problem. But I'm now six and a half weeks out and can bring my lips together without any problem. In fact, my mouth is fully closed in its resting position. My chin also no longer looks strained like it used to. My guess is that my muscles just took longer to adjust than some. Hope this helps..... Guest guest
Meaghan, Thanks for replying! Were both of your lips still super swollen at 3 weeks post op? Do you remember what week that everything kinda fell into place? I am so thankful that someone else went through this. I went through every post op photo I could and found no one elses upper lip about touching their nose. My lower lip was so swollen it about touched my chin. Right now the lower lip is still swollen and shows my bottom teeth all the way down to the gum. My upper lip is still very swollen too but it covers the top teeth to the brackets. Feeling is slowly coming back with sharp tingling but I am thankful for that. Tammy Re: Becoming a little worried........ Guest guest
Hi Tammy, Yes, my lips were pretty swollen at three weeks.... atlhough what I've discovered from this surgery is that my lips are actually suprisingly small (something I never noticed when I had an open bite)! So the lip swelling was still trumped by the cheek swelling. But my lips were certainly doing battle with the front brackets and would swell up some days more than others. I would say that things suddenly seemed to fall into place around the fifth week. As trite as it sounds, this was also around the time that I stopped thinking about my appearance as much, as I was back at work and preoccupied with getting up to speed in that regard. One day I looked in the mirror and noticed my lips were together with very little strain. This board was really helpful to me throughout this process, but sometiimes I found it was good to take a break from reading about other people's experiences. I was driving myself crazy with worry some days, wondering why my healing process was so different from others that I read about. Giving myself a day or two to not think about all of it all of the time helped alleviate some of my stress. Just a thought.... Meaghan > Meaghan, > > Thanks for replying!
