Hi,

Remember me? I'm the one who asked about perioral dermatitis awhile

back? Anyway, my little bumps haven't really gone away and I have

yet another question for you guys. Could my antibiotics (dynacin)

possibly be causing the bumps?? I did not have them before going on

the antibiotics and now can't get rid of them. They have yet to go

away in 4 months time!! I read the posts about PF and mine do itch,

but I thought rosacea itches also. Anyway, mine aren't typical

rosacea bumps- they are small and in little clusters all around my

nose and mouth- nowhere else. Is it possible that I have an

overgrowth of yeast and that this is what's causing them?? If one

had PF, would it be all over the face or just in certain areas?

Prior to going on the antibiotic, I had been using a topical steroid

for a long time, but the areas where I used it (my cheeks) are

clear. I just can't figure it out. I've tried to think about what

else I could've changed since these bumps appear other than the

antibiotic. The only things I come up w/ are installing a chlorine

filter and water softner in my house, and I also started using the

toleraine moisturizing cream b/c I thought it would be better on my

sensitive skin. Could the water softner be allowing the yeast

to " grow " on my face?? I'm grasping, I know, but I'm getting

desperate. Also, I can't think of what ingredient in the toleraine

would be causing the bumps- wouldn't my face be somewhat used to this

lotion by now?? I have tried a couple of different moisturizers, but

they always make other problems appear, so I haven't used them long

enough to see if the bumps would go away. Any advice would be

greatly appreciated as I'm about to go crazy. What do you think????

Thanks,

Hi . Nice to hear from you again. I'm sorry to hear you're still

having problems with your peri-oral dermatitis. I don't know much

about it beyond avoiding fluoride toothpaste, so below are just some

general thoughts based on your own good ideas:

Re: Toleriane. I definitely react to their moisturizer. I'm fine for

several days, then I start getting what I assume are clogged pores,

though I get them on the sides of my face. Several days off the

moisturizer and they clear up. I have the same problem with their

foaming cleanser. Too bad, because I liked the products otherwise.

I wouldn't think the problem is with your water softener, though

someone in this group had a bad flare recently in what sounded like a

similar situation. You could always try washing your face with

bottled water for a few days and see if that makes a difference.

So why not try life without Toleraine for half a week or so, and if

the bumps aren't improved then try washing your face with bottle

water for the rest of the week. If you face is still unchanged, then

talk to your physician about PF. Minocycline is a form of

tetracycline which does worsen PF so it's certainly possible -- and

easy enough to diagnose and treat.

But your physician needs to determine the next step -- that's not

something to undertake on your own or based on my virtual advice, I'm

not your doctor and you aren't my patient and I can't even see your

face, much less know anything else medically about you.

Good luck, and let us know what happens.
