Guest guest
Hello, all! I saw my surgeon today and got the okay to start chewing! Yay! I'm six and a half weeks post-op right now (I had lower only). He said everything looks good, and I don't have to (get to) see them until after my braces come off. I'm a little sad about that! I picked up my son and we met my husband at Fuddrucker's! I've been dreaming about biting into a hamburger for weeks now. I did pretty well--I can only open two fingers wide, so I had to take little bites. I can't explain how good it felt to bite through something without effort (you know, moving that lower jaw around until the teeth are in a relatively decent position), nor can I tell you how cool it was to lose some of my " cow chewing her cud " action I used to have. I feel like I have to relearn how to chew because my teeth are in the right place now! It's weird. I was a little stiff, but slowly and surely I polished that burger off. I don't know if I've ever had a correct bite (and I'll be 33 in a week or so!); it felt very, very foreign. I get my upper wire put back on on my birthday (23rd) and just might lose the front bands--we'll see what the ortho says. I'll be 8 weeks post op then. They already put my lower wire on last week--man, that was a trip! I've been focusing so much on protecting my jaw, it took me a few minutes not to feel panicky inside while they were working. I can say with great gusto that I'm glad I did this. It was hard at times, but it's so, so worth it. Thanks again to everyone here who has posted their stories, answered my questions, calmed my post-op worries...you've all been terrific. I will continue to help where I can (but I'm not here as much because I'm back to teaching again). Take care... Carleen

Guest guest
Yea Carleen, that's awesome! I can't wait until I get to write a post like this. I can't imagine what eating with correct bite is like. I like you, have been living for the past many years (27 for me, 28 tomorrow!) with a bite that isn't aligned at all. Congrats! Glad all is going well! fellow MN girl, Cori

Guest guest
Hi Carleen! I can't wait until I can chew! I am 4 weeks post right now and I did try to chew something soft a few weeks ago. It didn't work so well. My dr. said I would be on a soft chew diet so I thought I would try it. It didn't go so well since i am still banded and have splints in. I did have pancakes and eggs last sunday! I hardly ate half the pancakes but it was pretty good! So i decided I will stick to the soups, shakes and smoothie diet until i get my splints out which is on Sept. 30! I can't wait! Take care! Central MN girl (not a big city girl!)
