Hi ,

While I do not live out by you, I'm in NY, I just had surg 5 wks ago.

I had an overbite, gummy smile up top and it was a chore as you said

to close up my lips with ease and my chin was not where it needed to

be to have a nice profile. Honestly one of the things that got me was

the way my lips rested when my mouth was closed as a profile...just

the other day sitting outside in the car, I saw someone look at me

and I thought-oh cover my mouth but I am post-op and it looks good

now :)

But back to you...I can tell you that there's a good chance if you

get a OS to say yes that you may have a challenge from Insurance if

many have told you it's " not medically nec " ...I wonder the apt you

just had, was it through ins, by the price--sounds like a no and

that's good, you don't wnat any No's in your ins file so to speak.

What you're getting into...?

I had upper done, up about 8mm, back a few and over a little....this

wasn't so simple, they cut into the facial bone and saw out a piece

and move things back to make it nice and then add a plate and screw

you together-inside...last I heard this was about a $20,000 surgery-

estimated 2 yrs ago...but for me medically nec as I had braces for

yrs as a child, then broke my lower jaw in an accident and well it

just wasn't anything braces could correct at this point, it was

medical. And the #1 reason I did it was to bite better and be

healthy, and to keep my teeth long term, lastly for me was cosmetic,

but that is a wonderful bonus as I see it.

as to the chin since my lower teeth were good and shaped well, I just

needed genioplasty for profile reasons and to not have my chin

look " bumpy " sort of, when my lips were closed...that was almost

$4000 and NOT covered at all by ins in the end fyi. they cut into the

jaw only and move a portion of it foward while the teeth stay in

place. I was Tightly banded shut for 3 wks, then to my surprise less

bands each week and now I only wear them about half the day to be

sure nothing gets out of wack...and I can open with them, so fine

with me.

I personally think it's very impt that you explore this until you are

satisified. I think it is so impt you are happy with you and as we

all know when you're not happy with the way you look or more so with

the way others look AT YOU-it's not good. I mean on one hand screw

them and what they think!, but on the other if it really gets to you

and you love youself in everyother way, then keep going, be happy for

YOU, whatever it takes and I am sure someone here or on the other

site can recommend a good OS in your area.

If it's got a hold of your confidence and you're dedicated to your

health (which you are by note ofyour therapy) then keep pushing and

don't give up!

Hi ,

For starters, you DEFINITELY should keep your October appointment.--

if you dont, you will always wonder, you will regret, and some part

of your mind will obsess over it. So definitely go see another

specialist--even if it costs you another $400. Give youself the

chance to get the information you need.

I dont think you're crazy. No one wants teeth that stick out. No

one wants comments. Or teeth that dont work. So one orthodontist

and one surgeon said they dont think further correction is warranted

for you? Maybe they're wrong. Thats just two people after all. And

besides, they arent living with your bite. We all know there are

good dentists, bad dentists, good dentists who explain badly. All

sorts. Find another. There must be someone here from CA who can

give you some advice on dentists.

An important thing you should know is that teeth arent totally

stable. They move over time. They really do. They tend to move in

the path of least resistance which means if your teeth are flailed

out to the front, they might flail out even further just from chewing

over the years or whatever becasue theres nothing opposing that

movement.

Also, you're only 22. Not eveyone's skeleton is fully matured by

then. I know mine wasnt. Sure I'd reached my final height by then,

but I could tell that certain parts of me, particularly my jaws, were

still changing in my twenties. Its obvious from my pictures (which

are NOT posted BTW). Your skeleton could still be makign subtle

changes. And that could affect your bite, your teeth, and your

appearance too.

You need a dentist whos gonna have an idea what your teeth are going

to be like in 5 years or so. And who can explain.

I dont know what will happen with you. Whether you will get surgery

or more braces or what. Tell us. Share. Vent. Whatever.

welcome ryan, sounds like you got a doosy of a problem. the good thing

is that there are still ethical doctors out there that will admit

there's nothing they can do for you instead of butchering you. the bad

news is they admit there's nothing they can do for you. after having

my chin advanced which brings the tongue forward i also am worried

about tongue thrust. if you have your lower jaw or chin advanced it

will pull the tongue forward and will make your thrust worse. if your

OS says he can't do anything maybe he was worried about changing your

facial profile. there are many non surgical options for you and i'd

try these first especially if surgeons don't dwant to touch you. (i'd

rather get a no for the right reason than a yes for the wrong reason)!

try this guy in san diego he sounds pretty knowledgable.

http://www.bracessandiego.com/tongue_thrust.htm

if you google tongue thrust you will find mucho. it sounds like you

need to correct this first as it will always ruin any other work you

have done. hope this helps/ eric

welcome ryan, sounds like you got a doosy of a problem. the good thing

is that there are still ethical doctors out there that will admit

there's nothing they can do for you instead of butchering you. the bad

news is they admit there's nothing they can do for you. after having

my chin advanced which brings the tongue forward i also am worried

about tongue thrust. if you have your lower jaw or chin advanced it

will pull the tongue forward and will make your thrust worse.

Thanks . I guess I forgot to mention in my post, that the jaw therapy did

include fixing

everything, including the Tongue Thrusting (which I no longer do) and the Mouth

Breathing(Which I also no longer do). I do appreciate your help though. I've

calmed

down a bit now and I think I know what the problem is. I pushed the teeth up

and out

from my tongue thrusting, and now that it's brought down, I think the 4 front

teeth need

to be angled down with surgery so that my profile fits how it should, because it

seems like

it's straight across when it should be down. Thanks again , and if you

have anymore

info for me now or in the future, please let me know.

I certainly hope all works out for you, but just remember this is a

very long and drawn out process. It could be 2 to 3 years before you

are finished with everything. That includes pre-op braces, surgery,

recovery (barring complications) and post-op braces. You are going to

have to step back take a deep breath count to 10 and get ready for a

long ride.

I know how frustrating the waiting and not knowing can be but you are

young (compared to some of us) and you have all of the time you need

to get second opinions, take your time and do it right, don't rush

into anything until you feel comfortable with the surgeon and the

procedure. Keep us posted.

Hey ,

I read your post and immediately felt for you. It sounds like you are

having a very frustrating time. I also live in Los Angeles and

perhaps can help shed some light on Dr.'s that can help you out.

I first had braces put on when I was 6 years old and then again when

I was 12. At the age of 14 I was told my Orthodontist that he had

corrected my overbite and open mouth problems as much as he could. He

recommended to my parents that I have oral surgery to correct my

structure. At the time my parents allowed me to decide how I wanted

to proceed. I, being the very know it all teenager, felt that I

didn't need the surgery and I just wanted to be done with braces and

the whole process. The orthodontist gave me a retainer to wear and

said he hoped for the best. Like most teenagers I defied most of what

my parents asked of me, which included wearing my retainer. In about

2 years my teeth had shifted so dramatically that the teeth no longer

fit in the retainers. When I was 26 my overbite had moved so

dramatically I was embarrassed by mouth and constantly tried to

posture my lower jaw forward to make up for the over jet.

When I graduated college and moved to LA in 2003 I made an

appointment with a new Dentist for annual teeth cleanings. The Dr.

took one look at my mouth and immediately started asking me about my

orthodontic history. He suggested that I get a consultation with an

orthodontist and oral surgeon because he could see severe problems

for me later on in life, loss of teeth, migraines, TMJ etc.

He recommended several orthodontists, one by the name of Dr. Yamada

(Burbank.) Dr. Yamada is a fantastic orthodontist. I have been a

patient of hers for 16 months. She was able to recommend an oral

surgeon for me as well. My surgeon is going to be Dr. Relle at Kaiser

Hospital in Hollywood. According to Dr. Yamada he is one of the best

surgeons she has have worked with and always recommends her patients

to him. The best part about going through Kaiser is that the surgery

is covered 100%. Unfortunately, the orthodontic treatment is not

covered by my insurance even though it's necessary for the surgery?!?

I would really recommend you call Dr. Yamada for a consultation. I

will say however, that she was definitely the most expensive, but

probably the most qualified and experienced for my complicated mouth!

I just found out this morning that my surgery is going to be on

December 7th 2004!!! For a while it seemed as though the surgery

would never happen and it feels great to finally have a date.

Hopefully you will be able to find some answers to your questions.

Feel free to email me if you need any other help or advice.

PS

I have been reading this site since I first embarked on my journey 16

months ago and I want to thank everyone who contributes because they

really help shed some light on what can be a very scary prospect. I

can't wait until I am on the " other side! "
