Guest guest
advancing your upper jaw will make your mouth larger and thus should give you a slightly deeper voice. for most it's not enough to notice though. if you move it enough it will change your upper palate to sinus cavity relationship and make it a little nasally. It will also tighten up your palate initially but it will relax with time. not being a singer I have no clue on the effects to your singing voice I can just relay what others have commented. good luck/eric > > > > I've never thought about it until now, but then again, I never > > > > thought about jaw surgery or braces until every professional I > >went > > > > to told me I needed both or my teeth would fall out in 20 years - > >I > > > > may have a deviated septum that is affecting my breathing and my > > > > voice. Guest guest
I think I know what he means, my upper palate felt tight post-op, and singing actually loosened it up (I discovered this at about 8 weeks after I'd gone back to work). It felt strange at first as everything was vibrating (I don't normally sing) but after awhile things settled down nicely, and I was able to hit those low notes I never could before. > > > > > > I've never thought about it until now, but then again, I never > > > > > > thought about jaw surgery or braces until every professional I > > > >went > > > > > > to told me I needed both or my teeth would fall out in 20 > >years - > > > >I > > > > > > may have a deviated septum that is affecting my breathing and > >my > > > > > > voice. Guest guest
When your upper jaw is moved forward it stretches the soft part of the palate where your uvula hangs down not allowing it to vibrate and make you snore. I imagine it could also affect your resonance. eric > > > > > > I've never thought about it until now, but then again, I never > > > > > > thought about jaw surgery or braces until every professional I > > > >went > > > > > > to told me I needed both or my teeth would fall out in 20 > >years - > > > >I > > > > > > may have a deviated septum that is affecting my breathing and > >my > > > > > > voice. Guest guest
HI, This is something we are all curious about, I would say that it might. If you are just doing your teeth/jaw, it should be just reacquainiting yourself with your new enviornment...but I can tell you that I am just getting back to my vocal commuting-solo and my pitch is off, but I think it's from not using my voice, bec the more I do it, it comes bk... I would be cautious if it's your " future " and not a hobby-heck Look at barbara stristand! > > > > I've never thought about it until now, but then again, I never > > > > thought about jaw surgery or braces until every professional I > >went > > > > to told me I needed both or my teeth would fall out in 20 years - > >I > > > > may have a deviated septum that is affecting my breathing and my > > > > voice. Guest guest
I notice a very nasally sounding voice after having upper last November. Your the first person that has described what is probably causing this. My ent said it was due to a hole in my septum caused by the surgery. I had surgery to close it but it has reopened and he was recommending a second which I surely don't want to go through if it's not causing my problem How did you find out this information? The only thing though is that supposedly my upper was not advanced only leveled. My surgeon confirmed that during my last visit. I complain about my voice, but he says he does not know why. My ent did notice that some of the metal fixtures are exposed into my sinus cavity. I don't know if this is common, but I'm thinking it could explain why I feel a cold sensation in the region above my upper teeth. Thanks for the info or any more that you could provide. Guest guest
mark, how did you get a hole in your septum from trimming your maxilla? it's not uncommon with septoplasty, they usually borrow a piece of cartilage to cover the hole. I'd definately get it fixed if it were me. that sounds like the source of the problem. after relooking at my xrays i can see how a screw if it was too long could perforate your sinus cavity and feel cool when you inhale. if you go in for surgery again you may want to have them remove the hardware to alleviate this. i'm gonna have my plate on my chin removed when i go back in cuz i can feel the screws and it bugs me. I don't know how you could get nasally without advancement cuz you won't have that little space under your nose and your soft palate shouldn't be stretched. how far are you out of surgery? maybe the bones haven't healed yet. sorry but not being a doc i'm just grasping! good luck to ya/ eric > > > > > > > I've never thought about it until now, but then again, I > never > > > > > > > thought about jaw surgery or braces until every > professional I > > > > >went > > > > > > > to told me I needed both or my teeth would fall out in 20 > > >years - > > > > >I > > > > > > > may have a deviated septum that is affecting my breathing > and > > >my > > > > > > > voice. Guest guest
Hi : An ENT said the septal hole was caused when they leveled my upper. He had looked at it with a scope before he did the septoplasty. After the jaw surgery the front of my septum was very bent. You could tell when they moved up one side of my upper it just bent my nose over. The doc even said it looked like someone had sat on my nose when I came out of the OR. He is supposed to be a very good jaw surgeon, but I don't know if he did something wrong or just something that was unpredictable. The septal perforation is about 2mm in size along the floor of my nose about 3 or 4 mm towards the back. I'm sure I did not have it before because I have always done saline rinses for sinus problems and after surgery I noticed the water would run out the other nostril when flushing. I went to a second ENT who said he did not think that was the problem, but in a few weeks he is going to put in a plastic button as a temporary fix to see if it helps. Then if it does I will have surgery to close it. I hope it helps because it seems that I am talking through my nose or a can especially with n or ing sounds. It's been 10 months since my surgery. My surgeon said to give it a year to fully heal and see how it is at that point. I think I will definately have the screws removed as well, do you know if that is a lengthly process. I appreciate your comments and wish you the best as well. Guest guest
mark, i'm still confused what they did. you said they didn't advance your jaw yet it bent your septal cartlage. usually when they advance the maxilla they cut it on an up angle to the front which will push up on the septum giving the nose a little upturn on the end and widen the nares. a hole is definately not normal. i've heard of holes from septoplasty and buttons are what they use for temp fix. being 10 months out yu shouldn't have much swelling. did your nose staighten out as the swelling went down. mine is still a little bent but getting better. it'll probably take an extra 30 min. to remove the hardware and of course you'll have more stitches. hopefully it'll help the nasally sound. good luck! eric > > > > > > > > > I've never thought about it until now, but then > again, I > > > never > > > > > > > > > thought about jaw surgery or braces until every > > > professional I > > > > > > >went > > > > > > > > > to told me I needed both or my teeth would fall out > in > > 20 > > > > >years - > > > > > > >I > > > > > > > > > may have a deviated septum that is affecting my > > breathing > > > and > > > > >my > > > > > > > > > voice. Guest guest
Hi : I'm probably confused myself, now I am wondering if he did advance it. He described the procedure on paper as a Lefort I maxillary osteotomy to level the occlusal plane. My lower was advanced because of my retrusive jaw and overbite. My nose did straighten some and seem to reach a plateau around 4 months. I did not notice that it was turned up but rather pushed over making my septum bent in the front. My surgeon tried to explain that he thought my nose had a natural bend in it to begin with and he said something about not taking enough off to compensate for this. Well I will have the button in on Oct 1st and my next visit with my jaw surgeon is in December for my year's follow-up. I really appreciate your comments because I will be better prepared on what questions to ask. I'll keep in touch and let you know. I'm sure your nose will continue to straighten. Mine was severly bent and nature did it best to make it almost back to normal.
