Guest guest
Hi Sheri: Like you I am 40 but I have had my braces on since April of 2002. I had surgery on March 10 of this year to pull back my lower jaw and a bone graft to lower my top teeth. I will be 30 weeks post-op this Wednesday and I haven't had any serious repercussions from my surgery. My upper teeth show now and my bite feels correct. Though I do feel some numbness in my chin yet after all these weeks, the OS said that would be normal. My braces won't come off for another six months, until I am ready for my implants. The orthodontist told me that surgery was 100% needed, so I was under no illusions about not needing the operation. There was no way braces by them selves would fix my under bite and fix my teeth on top. Like you Sheri, I was anxious and apprehensive about the operation, and that is normal. Finally, my orthodontist told me teeth like to go back to their original positions, that's why they keep the braces on longer then expected sometimes. Good Luck . Guest guest
Hi, I'm glad I found this group. I hope someone out there can relate to my situation and give me some insight, as I am about to opt for jaw surgery that I hadn't planned on needing. I am depressed and in shock. I have to make a decision as my braces are suppose to come off in a week and my teeth are a wreck after braces, here is my situation: I am 40 and have had braces for 1.5 years. I didn't know I needed braces until my dentist suggested that I see an ortho because my bite was slightly off on one side and I have a slight overbite. I was aware that I had a slight overbite, but my bite had never bothered me. (I didn't know I was broken) But I went to an ortho anyway, he told me that to correct the problem 100% I would need braces for 2 yrs. and jaw surgery to bring the lower out a bit or I could opt for 8 mo. in braces for an 80% improvement. I thought about it for a year and thought what the hey, I'm fine now so 80% better is going to be great, straighter teeth in front and leave the back teeth alone, or so he promised. Half way through braces, my teeth have completely shifted off line, I can't chew anymore, I have no bite as far as I can tell. Now I'm running scared and went to 2 other orthos for consults, both agree that the only treatment is jaw surgery. I am leary and scared that this will only make it worse. I'm am so angry at myself for ever going to get braces, they say it's not possible to get the teeth back to where they started. When you have the surgery, do the back teeth line up easily with another few months of braces? I guess what I'm asking is did anyone think they were OK like me before braces and ended up feeling worse and did surgery fix things. Help please, sorry for the long post. Guest guest
---Hi Sherri, my name is colleen and I just ran across this group today. I myself have had surgery 3 years ago and met a girl who had a similar situation. Seems her ortho worsened her bite (became opened) in which is was not before. Ended up having surgery to correct it and sued the orthodontist. anyway, she is happy with the result but did not anticipate having surgery either. Anyway, I hope that helps. Guest guest
yep, before you do anyting, i would contact a lawyer ... i'm sure your lawyer will tell you your next move... your ortho should be paying for your surgery and compensation for time lost and suffering from the surgery... also, i'm sure the surgery will improve your bite, but the surgery has risks (ex. possible permanent numbness of chin or lower lip).. i too learned the hard way, if it ain't that bad, don't bother trying to make it better, especially if it can carry risks; however, i don't think anyone would have thought that the ortho could screw up your bite.... > > > > Hi, > > > > I'm glad I found this group. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing your experience, it's comforting to know you came through it OK. It would have been better for me to know that surgery was inevitable. I need to get over it and just do whatever it takes to fix the problem. sherri -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , kev82go@a... wrote: > Hi Sheri: > Like you I am 40 but I have had my braces on since April of 2002. Guest guest
HI, I had the same problem with orthodontics making my bite worse. I had an underbite to start, but now have an open bite, which makes me bite my lip when chewing and talking. I had braces for about 2 years, but opted out of the jaw surgery. My orthodontist at the time did say the results will not be perfect, but will not be worse either. I too wish I have never got braces in the firt place. My teeth are straight now, but I suffer from a worse bite, which I have never had trouble with before. I am getting braces again becasue my teeth shifted and my bite is just terrible, but I almost have to go through with the jaw surgery now. I have been to two diferent orthodontists one that recommends jaw surgery, and will not treat me unless I agree to it. The other orthodontist wants to pull two teeth from my lowerjaw in hopes that it will move my back teeth behind my upper(My upper and lower teeth meet edge to edge and that is why I am always biting my lip). It has been a long haul, and I still have a long way to go, but I am going to get the jaw sugery done becaseu I can not continue with my bite this bad. I just hope all works out in the end with the jaw surgery. I have about a year to get ready for this sugery! -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " Colleen " <blessed4x20031998@y...> wrote: > > ---Hi Sherri, my name is colleen and I just ran across this group > today.
