Guest guest
a, it's early for you and no need to jump in with both feet yet. when i got my braces i also had about 10mm overjet. the ortho was able to reduce it to about 5mm which i was happy with and my bite was fine. I was also told i could get the last 5mm with lower advancement. you might stick with the braces and see how that works for you and then if you still want to have a chin get a genioplasty. I had my lower advanced 8mm along with 8mm genioplasty and now have a chin! however i did it to cure sleep apnea and would never have considered it for cosmetic purposes. while the surgery is no cake walk many have achieved the results they wanted but there is always risks of complications. you are right that with a narrow face your profile will improve but it will make it look a little longer from the front. you might want to schedule a consultation with an OS to see if he can project for you what you will look like. have a pleasant journey! eric > > A few months ago I decided to go to the orthodontist to get braces > for my crooked front teeth and before I knew it he was > mentioning " Lower mandibular deficiency " and operations etc. I must > admit it seems really drastic. Guest guest
a, I was in the EXACT situation as you are in now... Orthodontics took my overjet (somewhere between 10 to 11mm) all the way down to 5mm. The results were incredible! I too was told to have surgery, but if i knew that my overjet would have gone to only 5mm, i would not have had the surgery.... good luck! > > A few months ago I decided to go to the orthodontist to get braces > for my crooked front teeth and before I knew it he was > mentioning " Lower mandibular deficiency " and operations etc. I must > admit it seems really drastic. Guest guest
a, I have had braces for 3 yrs. I had same reaction to the sound of surgery! Have a consult with the surgeon. They can give you a compartive analysis of before and after (my surgeon did).... I too have a long thin face but the pictures do look too masculine. So, get your information first then decide. I have surgery on 11/22/04. I am ready to get it over with Best wishes Sadie dwilzen wrote: , same boat here. I am going for the same exact thing. When I initially went for braces, all I wanted was straight teeth..18 months later I have lower advancement scheduled next month. I think that the orthodontic work alone has made an improvement already and if it were not for extenuating circumstances I probably would not have the surgery. 2 years ago it sounded great, now I am not so sure. But hang in there, I can tell you in a month or so how it is. Also, be reluctant to have any teeth pulled, that his a whole other story. dan --- paulaglavin wrote: > > A few months ago I decided to go to the orthodontist > to get braces > for my crooked front teeth and before I knew it he > was > mentioning " Lower mandibular deficiency " and > operations etc. I must > admit it seems really drastic. Guest guest
Sadie, Thanks for the quick reply. I would love to hear how you got on. I had originally decided to look into braces as I am getting married this month and became very self aware. Of course I knew I would not get it sorted for the wedding and have decided to leave it until I come home from Honeymoon. I would like to have braces and then depending on the outcome decided on the operation later on. But according to the orthodontist I need to move my front teeth back 3mm as they are practically in the right position but it is the lower ones which are really far back - I think this is what is referred to as an overbite. I cannot see braces alone doing the trick. I am afraid that if I have the advancement I will have a chin which is far too strong for a lady. Let me know how you get on if you don't mind. Thanks > > > > > A few months ago I decided to go to the orthodontist > > to get braces > > for my crooked front teeth and before I knew it he > > was > > mentioning " Lower mandibular deficiency " and > > operations etc. I must > > admit it seems really drastic. Guest guest
It could be a matter of your upper jaw being over developed. The surgeon will determine if you need your lower jaw advanced or your upper moved back or a combination of both. I had an underbite. my surgeon did not want to move my lower jaw the whole way back (6 mm) because it would have given me a weak and receded chin so he opted to move the upper out 5 and the lower back 3. I am very pleased with the results. You can have your studies done to determine what is best and how much movement you need for upper and/or lower before you decide, this may halp you to make the decision. Keep us posted.
