I think most of my pain stemmed from the repair work done to my upper abdominal muscles to pull them back into the right place, and most people don't have that done. Guest guest
- I'm just over 3 weeks post-op Panniculectomy (full panni with upper abdomen), done 2/14. Waited for Panni until I was 21 months Post-WLS. I'm known to have a VERY high pain threshold (and very hard head) (unless we're talking papercuts, then I bitch all day!). =) For me, my OPEN proximal RNY, performed 5-11-01, was a 9 on the 1-10 pain scale. Out of the hospital in 2 days (me being hardheaded). Couldn't sleep for weeks, couldn't situp without help, couldn't get in/out of bed, everything I needed help with (even, excuse me, even wiping my own butt - God bless my husband). Even after a C-section (where epideral ran OUT prior to cutting me open - OUCH, thought I'd die and THAT set the standard for pain, that WAS A 10), I thought my gastric bypass would be EASY. Nope, to me, it was a 9!! Now, Panniculectomy, despite what I've heard, was a PIECE OF CAKE. To me, it was a WALK IN THE PARK! Up walking 2 hrs after recovery. Stooped over, nonetheless, from tight belly, but up walking. Never had bed pan, every 20 minutes walking to potty alone. Out of hospital in 23 hours, could have left earlier. Pain scale 2-3, honest to God. Home pain scale 0-1. Immediately stopped 'drip " morphine after they took me to my room. Just dug in. Went home on Vicodin 7.5. Used sporatically to sleep. Just my opinion. Panni was not bad at all!! Bobbie Anchorage In a message dated 3/8/03 6:05:44 AM, Graduate-OSSG writes: <<Well this is something I want to do in the future. Guest guest
Kate, & All -- You know, I've monitored this WLS vs. PS (panni/abdominoplasty) pain issue for sometime. Here are my thoughts. Those that had a " closed " or LAP RNY gastric bypass surgery, always rate the plastic/reconstructive surgery (panni/abdom.) as a significantly MORE painful surgery (because Lap is significantly less invasive). Those of us that had the OPEN RNY (where they take ALL YOUR GUTS OUT TO CHECK THEM OUT, CUT THEM UP, REARRANGE THEM AND THEN CUT AND REPAIR THE CUT MUSCLE WALLS that got them in there), always rate the plastic/reconstructive surgery (panni/abdom.) as LESS painful. I believe this to be due to the severe invasiveness of the OPEN vs. the LAP. OPEN is much more invasive, however I'd take it over the Lap any day. (I want the docs to " see " everything " in person " when it comes to this surgery and not just work with a scope.) Again, I just had my Panni, and my pain with that was very LOW. My pain with my OPEN Proximal RNY was VERY HIGH. So, those are my thoughts, for what they're worth. Hi - always a personal experience. I have a fairly high pain threshhold, and thought that my hernia repair repair and abdominoplasty was much more difficult to recover from than my original lap bypass surgery. The first 24 hours after surgery, the actual pain was worse with the bypass (I refused to take pain meds after by bypass, but that's another story), and it was very very bad. But with the reconstructive surgery, the overall pain went on for much longer, and I ended up using pain meds for the first time in my life for a week! I think most of my pain stemmed from the repair work done to my upper abdominal muscles to pull them back into the right place, and most people don't have that done. My tummy tuck/thighlift/hernia repair/bladder lift was more painful than my open RNY. Could have been due to the extensiveness of the plastics OR the fact that my wls surgeon is a petite woman with hands smaller than my 8-year-old's. My open RNY incision is only three inches long. But the pain from that load of plastics was very rough. In separate surgeries I had breast lift/implanst and an arm lift. Neither of those were particularly painful after the first day or so. hugs, Ann

Guest guest
- As far as what I would rate this compared to my gastric surgery, this much harder. I believe the reason being is that I was in the hospital for 4 days on morphine before, while I was only on morphine one day. I did, however, have to go home with a catheter due to no being able to urinate, but since we took that out, thing are " running " great. I'm currently on vicodin for pain and valium for muscle spasms and an antibiotic so my days are pretty much a blur.' THank again for writing. I appreviate all the well wishes I've been getting (sorry for misspelling -- drug related). CONGRATS!!! Well this is something I want to do in the future. Guest guest
I have to disagree here. I had an open RNY on 9/26/00 and a TT (skin removal with muscle repair) 9/26/02 (on my 2 year anniversary). I have to say that the TT was 10x MORE painful than anything I've ever experienced in my life - including giving birth to 3 kids, gall bladder attacks, appendicitis, and all my other surgeries. It's completely a personal thing. I used to say that it had to do with the fact that I had muscle repair done as well as the skin removal, but I've since learned that there are people who have had the TT/muscle repair who have experienced very little pain. Of course they didn't use the same surgeon that I did. I haven't met ANYONE who had their TT done by my surgeon who said that it wasn't painful. I also haven't met anyone who used my surgeon who said that it wasn't worth it either. Three weeks of pain for incredible results is a perfectly fair trade to me. And I know that the results last, I've seen people who had their TT's done by him years ago and they're as tight as flat as me. Pretty cool. Anyway, we're all different. I always thought that I had an extremely high pain threshold until I had my TT. Then I turned into a morphine pump addict. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comR http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
Well, I've had both lap & open. My original RNY was open, I had no pain whatsoever, just discomfort. My transection was lap, and I had a little pain. But, my TT was very painful, but percoset saved the day. I also have a high pain threshold and tend not to take pain pills, but when I realized after the TT that taking the percoset as prescribed would keep the pain at bay, no problem. in NJ ************************** > Kate, & All -- > > You know, I've monitored this WLS vs. PS (panni/abdominoplasty) pain issue for sometime.
