Guest guest
Hi , I posted this on site 2 but am repeating here for others' benefit. My surgeon said that a yawn is an uncontrolled opening and should be avoided if at all possible (for anyone, not just recovering jaw surgery patients). Supporting the lower jaw is about all you can do. I control all of my yawns that way now. > > Hey all, I haven't posted much because I've had a really tough time > recovering after upper, lower and nasal cavity reconstruction. Guest guest
susan, what do you mean you support your lower jaw during yawns at 2 yr post op period? I too have painful yawns right now, i am 3.5 months post op, i can stifle pretty well, but don't want to, without my elastics it is a little easier, but not completely back to normal. after my visit with OS on Monday, he thinks my pain is a muscular situation so i am applying moist heat per his request, massaging my muscles and hoping to get them more relaxed so that yawning becomes more comfortable. > > > > Hey all, I haven't posted much because I've had a really tough time > > recovering after upper, lower and nasal cavity reconstruction. Guest guest
Hi , I do the same thing I've done since post-op, just support the lower jaw by holding it just under my chin. You basically want to prevent the jaws from opening too far. > > susan, what do you mean you support your lower jaw during yawns at 2 > yr post op period? Guest guest
Hey , Were you advised to do that? i have never heard of that before. I also have never heard of any rish associated with opening too wide. i am at the point now where i am trying to open as wide as i can/ i know i am not where i used to be, couldnt get a burger in, but it LOOKS wide. i have no discomfort with this stretching. Should i be concerned about opening too wide? katie > > > > susan, what do you mean you support your lower jaw during yawns at > 2 > > yr post op period? Guest guest
Hi , Yes, I'm aware of it now, so I pay attention to controlling my jaw opening whenever I yawn. Do others do that? I don't know. Will I always do it? Yes, if I can think of it at the time. My surgeon recommended it to me and I think it's a good idea. You might not feel that way, your surgeon might not even mention it. I'm sure that when you are in the post-op phase, your surgeon will give you recommendations on how to exercise your jaws in order to stretch the opening, since at first it will be limited. You should listen to him/her. Our dental professionals tell us we should floss and brush after every meal for optimal dental health. Do you do that? I'll admit, I lapse from time to time, I don't floss as much as I should. There's lots of things out there that we should and shouldn't do. A person could go pretty crazy trying to do it all or worrying about it. I just do the best I can for me. > > > > > > susan, what do you mean you support your lower jaw during yawns at > >2 > > > yr post op period?
