Guest guest
Hi Stacey, It sounds like you are in pretty good shape if your gums have only receded slightly. Usually it just means that you need to brush better along the gum line. I have been told by my periodontist to brush gently at a 45 degree angle right at the gum line. You could also try an electric toothbrush(like Sonicare, Braun Oral-B etc.). They are generally considered better for the gums. Another MAJOR thing is to make sure that you floss thoroughly at least once a day. I have also been told that Listerine is the only over-the-counter mouthwash that actually helps prevent gum disease. I had upper and lower surgery about two years ago. My gums were not great when I started treatment, but I think the braces and the difficulty in cleaning my teeth after the surgery made them even worse. Now I have a couple of bottom front teeth where the gums have receded pretty severely. Obviously this is a big problem because it has already lead to bone loss and I might eventually lose those teeth if they can't stop the bone loss. I'm having gum grafts done in about a month or so, and they're hopeful that this will stop the bone loss and save the teeth. I've learned the hard way that gum recession is something that you have to take very seriously. I had no idea that receding gums could lead to major problems so rapidly. The main thing is that you brush and floss well and you keep an eye on the problem. If your gums keep receding make sure you go for treatment right away. - > Hiya everyone, > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. Guest guest
, I found out you don't even need to have gum disease to get bone loss. I had an infection below the gum line that in two days ate away all the bone next to one of my teeth. I am going in next tue for a bone graft to save the tooth. I will let you know what happens. I hope it works I dont want to loose teeth before even having surgery. > > Hiya everyone, > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. Guest guest
, I have heard of situations like that. It's scary because the bone can disappear quickly and people rarely realize the severity of the problem. I had some sort of infection near those bottom front teeth and I'm almost certain it contributed to the bone loss. My gums got very swollen, red and tender and it took a couple of weeks to go away completely. I now wonder if I had gone for treatment right away if I might have prevented some of the bone loss. Let me know how your bone graft goes. I have a feeling that I might be needing some bone grafts in the future given the current condition of my mouth. Good luck next week! - > > > Hiya everyone, > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. > I > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all clear . > However > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked if this > was > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely. Guest guest
Hi, I had lower jaw advancement, upper palate expansion, and genioplasty ten years ago. I have some recession in general and several teeth that are more so. I have been very diligent in my flossing and I think this is one of the best options. However, the real story is that the orthodontics can certainly be the cause. My orthodontist took pride in his fast treatment times and the downside of that is the fast movement of teeth can definitely cause the gum loss. I keep my situation monitored, but thus far there have been no problems. > Hiya everyone, > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. Guest guest
, Well, I had my bone graft yesterday. It was not the most pleasent experience. I recommend being put under if you dont do well with novaciane. I ended up feeling most of the digging he was doing trying to clean out the infection that was still left under the gum. After cleaning it out he took a dremal type tool to smooth the remaining bone down. Next, they put in the doner bone with some white liquad enzyme to simulate the growth of bone. Then he stitched me up. I found out, after there may have not been enough bone to get the new bone to regenerate. So, I might end up getting an implant in the end. I wont find out for sure until its been six months. I would recommend this procedure if its not too late and too much bone is gone. Like it ended up being in my case. > > > > Hiya everyone, > > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. > > I > > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all clear . > > However > > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked if this > > was > > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely. Guest guest
Thanks for the update . I hope that everything works out for the best with your tooth. It would be rough to go through all that for nothing. I know you always have to do whatever possible to save your real teeth, but it's tough anyway. I also appreciate you being honest about how rough the experience was. After all the surgeries I've had in my mouth, I've come to expect the worst. So I'm not all that surprised. I don't really know what the exact situation is with my bone loss. All I know is that they never even mentioned a bone graft and instead recommended the gum graft. I have an appointment next week that will hopefully clear up some of this. I don't want to have gum grafts done just to find out a few months later the teeth need to be extracted. The gums on my two bottom front teeth are very severely receded and the teeth are actually slightly loose due to bone loss. I know that can't be a good sign. - > > > > > Hiya everyone, > > > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in > june. > > > I > > > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all clear . > > > However > > > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked if > this > > > was > > > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely. Guest guest
Hi , I was away last week and missed a lot. I'm glad you posted this information as I was not aware of some of the recommendations to help prevent gum disease. I was far more careful with flossing pre and post-op while I was in braces, but once out of them, I will admit I'm not anywhere as diligent. The Sonicare was too much for my post-op sensitive teeth, but I should and will try to go back to it. I now see my dental hygienist more regularly since I started in braces, it's just one of those things I think is important even though my insurer doesn't cover it fully at this frequency. Sorry to hear you have remedial work, though. Hope it goes ok for you. > > Hiya everyone, > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. Guest guest
You should aslo do deep cleaning every year at least at the periodontist. I did a bone graft procedure called wilckodontics, which is a fancy name for bone graft (from the inventors). The periodontist did it for me under local anesthesia because I had both gum recession and root resorption, double whammy. I feel OK now but there is no assurance for the long term. Here's the website http://www.wilckodontics.com/ ANy bone graft I would think woudl work. > > > Hiya everyone, > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in june. > I > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all clear . > However > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked if this > was > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely. Guest guest
Micheal, Let me know how the gum graft goes. I will be thinking about getting that if my bone graft takes. I ended up losing alot of gum around that tooth because of the infection. Also, do you know what the price of a gum graft runs? Thanks. > > > > > > Hiya everyone, > > > > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off in > > june. > > > > I > > > > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all clear . > > > > However > > > > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked if > > this > > > > was > > > > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely. Guest guest
Hi , Well, as you might have guessed, gum grafts are not cheap. I was quoted the price of $500 a tooth. However, I am having three teeth in a row done, so they only charged me for two ($1000). Also my insurance will cover half of the procedure. So in the end it will only cost me about $500, which isn't too bad. I'm not having the actual procedure until Nov. 5, so it will be awhile before I can give you a report, but I'll make sure to give you the details once I have it done. - > > > > > > > Hiya everyone, > > > > > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off > in > > > june. > > > > > I > > > > > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all > clear . > > > > > However > > > > > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked > if > > > this > > > > > was > > > > > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely. Guest guest
, Yeah I figured it wasn't cheap. But I am willing to pay that if I get to keep my tooth. By the way a bone graft isn't any cheaper. Mine was 1120.00 and insurance covered half. Talk to you later. > > > > > > > > Hiya everyone, > > > > > > > > I had upper and lower surgery in march and my braces off > > in > > > > june. > > > > > > I > > > > > > > > had to go back to the ortho today who gave me the all > > clear . > > > > > > However > > > > > > > > he did say that my gums were slightly receeding, i asked > > if > > > > this > > > > > > was > > > > > > > > related to the surgery and he said it was unlikely.
