Thanks Dawn -

This has certainly been a VERY frustrating and perplexing mystery, with the

regard to the weight of skin removed during my Panni on 2/14. Please bear

with me as I never use this forum to bitch, complain, etc., but I now need to.

(Okay, after your read this, was ANY SKIN (or fat) even really removed????)

[insert " Twilight Zone " theme music here, Da da Da da ... Da da Da da ...} =)

Immediately after surgery, Doctor didn't remember, said she'd find out, that

she had back to back surgeries that day and had to refer to her notes This

was at first appoint post-op, Day 3.

Next appnt, Day 6, at doctor's office to remove the 160 staples, Dr. said she

still didn't remember and was waiting her notes from the hospital (Alaska

Regional/Humana).

Post-op Day 14, I finally called hospital and got my surgeon's notes. There

was NO mention of skin weight, just entire detailed procedue. When it came

to " skin weight " being measured, the surgeon's notes said 'see surgical

nurses notes.' Called and asked for these to be faxed to me, they said they

were too lengthy and they'd mail them. It has now been 22 days, I've

received no " nurses " notes. Furthermore, my doctor and professional staff

still has NOT received any informatin or notes they've requested from the

hospital, even after much prodding.

Okay, don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I WANT TO KNOW, DAMMIT!!! I'm

afraid (for whatever reason) that the skin removed/fat WAS NOT WEIGHTED and

NOTED for the record, that, for some reason, it fell through the cracks, so

to speak. (These exact sentiments/concerns were echoed by my surgeons

nursing staff - NOT associated with the hospital nursing staff -- that it is

quite possible they did NOT WEIGH THE SKIN)!!! AAAARRRRRHHHHH.

If this is true, HEADS ARE GONNA ROLL!! That's what I went in for, there

should be a PROTOCOL in place for skin removal weight, as I KNOW they do it

for breast surgery and for others. Just my luck -- I'm a very detail

orientated person, and will go to my grave wondering, if they don't have the

answer. Lord knows NOBODY want's that!!!!!

Now, hopefully, you all won't think I'm totally nuts. It's just that I

went in ONLY for skin removal, and want to know what that was. There are

various reasons, besides my own, i.e., wonder if insurance company wants to

know, etc., etc. Aaarrgh!!!!

This NOT knowing is exaserbated by the scale having fluctuated so much,

normal routine, no binges, lots of protein and continued proper " use " of my

tool, water, etc., etc. I know this scale fluctuation is all normal, under

" normal conditions " , but I am post surgical, swelling has reduced already,

numbers HAVE NOT, and the scale will never be able to tell me what actually

was removed. This is psychological warfare if I've ever experienced it!!!

=)

Sorry to vent. Please believe me when I say I'm definitely NOT a numbers

freak (control freak maybe but NOT numbers freak). This has all been a

blessing, I continue to thank God for each and every day prior to WLS,

post-WLS, and Panni surgery. I am thankful to have a solid head on my

shoulders and no problems with my WLS, this however, is ....

I just hate it when people are inept and proper records may not have been

kept!

Thanks for listening (especially at time when there are more important things

in the world!)

Bobbie, at my first visit to my PS after my abdominoplasty, I asked

her how much was removed, and she told me she hadn't received the

report back from Pathology yet. At the second visit, she had the

results (950 gms or about 2.5 pounds). She also said that Pathology

is required to weigh the skin, if I understood her correctly. So, my

suggestion would be to try to reach the Pathology Dept. of the

hospital. It's worth a shot, right? I wanted to know, too.

Good luck,

My experience with my TT/hernia repair/panni removal was that almost 25

pounds was removed...and after all was said and done, it was reflected on the

scale.

I'm not sure if I am right, but I think this thread started with someone

wanting to know if 30 or more pounds can be removed with a TT or panni?

Anyway, the answers so far, that I have read, all say between 2 and 5 pounds

of weight being removed! That doesn't seem like very much. Is it POSSIBLE to

have 30 or more pounds removed, including fat with the skin, or is that just

not going to happen? Anyone out there HAD this much weightloss after a TT or

panni?

One of our local people was here tonight & has lost 333 lbs. She started

just over 500 (like 512, I think) and is 5'5 " . She had 25 # of skin

removed.

I had quite a belly, still complete with fat in parts, though my TT wt was

129. The weight was 4#.

I observed 2 TT. One was minimal, as she was totally at goal wt and wasn't a

fat belly person, anyway (fingers in ears, wiggling). The other still had

about 50# to lose AND was a belly person. Hers weighed about 10#.

So, does that help?

There is a man in my support group who had 30 lbs removed. He lost well over

300 lbs though. I also have a friend who recently had a panni and hernia

repair in Canada and they removed 25 lbs of the panni plus 5 more lbs for

the hernia.

However, it seems for most of us who lose between 100 and 150 lbs, it's more

like the 2-5 lbs you said below.

We have already won when we believe it in our hearts.

I have a friend who recently had almost 50 pounds removed with a

lower body lift and lipo. She has had a somewhat rough time with her

recovery, though. All-in-all she has lost over 220 pounds since her

lap RNY. Alot of pounds can be removed, I guess, if you have alot

that needs to come off. Me, myself, lost 12 pounds with my TT,

breast lift and brachioplasty last March. Hope this helps... Deb

One of our men lost 47 lb. in an abdominoplasty, and another 38

pounds. Both were huge men to begin with. I lost only 10 lb. in

mine, including hip and butt lifts, or so the surgeon said.

Janet, I had 10 lbs removed with my TT and I've read of others with more than

that. My doctor even told me he removed one that was 40 lbs. She had

started at over 500 lbs and lost 100 lbs on her own, but her panni was

causing her massive problems. I saw one on the Discovery Channel one time

that weighed 55 lbs, I think it was someone that had lots several hundred

pounds first though.

It just depends on where you carried your weight and how much is left over in

the tummy area. I was one that there was no way I was going to lose my last

10 lbs without a tummy tuck, it was all just hanging skin in my tummy area,

upper and lower. That put me at my goal weight.

Good luck to you,

Donna M.

10 lbs without a tummy tuck, it was all just hanging skin in my tummy area,

upper and lower. That put me at my goal weight.

Good luck to you,

Donna M.

Bobbie,

I do understand your frustration. My surgeon came in to tell me the details

of my surgery, right away. I don't know if all PS is done this way. I went

to a PS hospital. The building had been a school converted into a small

hospital. When I went in, I was shown to my room. I changed and then was

shown to the operating room. This was just two doors down from my room.

There are only six patients for PS at any given time.

You aren't nutts. After I had my hystorectomy, I asked what they did with my

uterus! It may have been the drugs but I wanted to know. I had never thought

about it before but I did then. I also wondered what they do with that skin

they take from PS. Is there a burn victim wearing our old skin???

You know, its funny. When I had the panni done, my first

question in recovery was " Do I still have a belly button? " I could hear

all the nurses snicker when I asked but I didn't care. My PS told me how

much skin he had taken off within a day or two.

As far as the skin going to burn units, I have heard recently

that most " skin " used for burn skin grafts are synthetic. There is less

of an allergic reaction to it so human skin is not being used anymore. I

don't know how true that is, but it's an interesting thought.

EWhether the skin is reuesed was asked of a PS who spoke at a local

support group. The PS said the skin is not reused , and in fact

can't be reused because it has no tone or elasticity. It's

shot...goes right in the dumpster.

(wouldn't it be a drag to get a skin graft rife with stretch marks?!!)
