Guest guest
Hi , I had upper/lower/genio. Genio was suggested because of my " strong " chin which would probably become stronger after the lower jaw was advanced and the upper jaw impacted. I also couldn't close my lips naturally, so I suppose it helped there too. You should ask your surgeon about how soon you can fly, especially overseas. I don't think it's a good idea to go in that short a time. You'll be pretty wiped out, I am Superwoman (or rather, was) and my 75 year old parents were tiring me out two weeks post-op when they came to visit. I flew from Toronto to the UK for business at about 11 weeks. I was mostly worried about being able to relieve the pressure in my ears as I couldn't open my jaws very wide even at that point. It didn't turn out to be a problem. I also couldn't eat a lot, no crunchy foods, tough meats, etc. I took 5 weeks off work. I'm an accounting manager, had to go back for some pretty tight reporting deadlines. Did some 14 hour days in week 6 and wiped myself out, had to leave on the Thursday and take a long weekend of just pooping out on the couch to recover. The day I left, I got all weak and trembly and my mouth was swelling up inside. Really lets you know what stress does to the body, that's why I don't try to be Superwoman anymore. It ain't worth it! Good luck with your decisions. Hope that helped. > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > year of ortho. Guest guest
Hi , Excellent -- my first surgery buddy! I'm having lower surgery on December 8 and my surgeon is also thinking about genio to " trim " (for lack of a better word) my pointy chin. She wants to wait until she sets my jaw back to make a decision, so I'll only know if it was done when I wake up. I have lots of confidence in my surgeon and told her to proceed if she thinks it's necessary. Of course, genio is covered by my insurance, so my decision is somewhat easier than yours. Although, as the surgery date draws closer I am finding myself becoming a bit more anxious about the cosmetic angle. She also wants me to consider paranasal implants (also covered by insurance), but I don't know. I'd like to keep some of my old face! I'm taking 4 weeks off of work, per my doctor's orders. I think you'll need at least 4 weeks with upper/lower. But everyone heals differently so you may find you can do some low-impact work from home after a few weeks. I'd rather go back early than need to request additional time off. As for traveling to the UK 2.5 weeks later, I'd advise against it. I'm in San Francisco and my family is coming to me this Christmas! Is there any way your family could have a New York holiday instead? Guest guest
HI MAddie, Gentle warning, who's your insurance with? I ask bec I was approved 2 times with letters and all for upper/lower and genio....then 2 wks pre-op, they changed their minds and BLAMO, denied the genio portion!!!!!!!! NO kidding, it sucked. Almost $4000. was due before the surgery...suddenly, and at two weeks pre-op, emotions start to get intense and suddenly on top of that, a large financial responsibility hit me. I was not about to do this half-assed or again, so I found the money and paid for it. I may still agrue it, I can appeal, but I didn't then bec of no time and I didn't want them playing games with my upcoming future...now I am only waiting bec they still have not paid my OS...I just want the bill paid for what was promised then I am going to fight. Chances are I will loose, but at least I will try. But word to the wise...this may change. The only way they usually cover genio is for sleep apthena...so FYI. Be prepared, JO > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > > year of ortho. Guest guest
Hi Maddie, Well, you are my first surgery buddy too. Somehow it's reassuring to know that someone is going to have a similar operation the next day. I have been in orthodontics since March after having shopped around quite a bit for the team I felt comfortable with. Though you find yourself making judgements on the most arbitrary evidence (I am a neat freak and I found myself very put off by one surgeon whose office was a disaster - didn't feel I trusted him with millimetres!). With two months to go, my orthodontics are almost finished and now I'm having real sweats about the whole thing. I guess this is normal as you have the date on the horizon. I am a bit worried about support as I am single and there's only so much friends can put up with, I guess. And so many of the questions no-one can answer precisely as everyone is different. Though the site gets very comforting in some ways (to feel that you are not alone) sometimes I get very worried about all the horror stories. I am worried about - whether to have the genio? The money isn't the first concern, more just how I will feel if I don't like how I look afterwards (I am doing this whole operation for structural not cosmetic reasons - I have been advised that it's the only way to stabilise my mouth and keep my teeth, so I'd be very happy just to look like I do... ) and wish I had had it done to keep things the same. I couldn't face another operation! - whether I will get depressed afterwards. I'm not particularly prone but (this might be a stupid idea) I wonder whether it might be worth discussing this with a doctor - how long recovery will take until I can function normally. And what the work consequences of that will be (I am rushing around talking all day) - just how to organise my life in advance so that I can make sure that anything that needs to be done is done. Again, the " living on your own " thing. Also, whilst I know this is a response to me minimising the deal here, I am getting a bit freaked by people's jokes about how funny it will be to have me silent for so long. Or their speculation about whether this is cosmetic surgery? (Perhaps I just have lousy colleagues and friends!!). Having said all this, and without getting too spacey, I also know that - some of this is just natural anxiety about stuff I can't (for once) even try and control. It's normal to be worried. - even though there will be pain and discomfort to negotiate, like most " big " experiences, I am bound to learn stuff through it - I am 43 and have worked for 20 years wihout more than 2 weeks holiday. So, even though this will be enforced, this still represents a big block of time to slow down, think and resign myself to moving with the pace of a situation. Perhaps it will change me in a few ways I don't imagine. It's pathetic but my Mom died last year and for some reason, I am really missing her at the moment. I guess you are never too old to feel like you need a parent around! I'm rambling now - forgive me. Anyhow, It was really good to hear from you and thanks for your support. It would be cool to keep in touch and see how things are going. Kindest > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > > year of ortho. Guest guest
Hi , I'm having surgery (probably upper only) on Dec 8. I'm in graduate school, and this turns out to be the week before finals. The surgical coordinator for my surgeon said that I should be good to take finals the following week (less than a week post op!) as long as I'm just sitting and taking tests. She also said I could drive the day after surgery! Seems a little optimistic to me..even if I am allowed to drive and take finals, I'm not sure I'll be up to it. We'll see I guess! Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself! I'd love to correspond pre and post surgery with others going through it around the same time! > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > year of ortho. Guest guest
, I had just upper last week and was able to stop the meds after 1 day and drove but i wouldn't have even considered taking a final after a week. I just couldn't concentrate for that long. best of luck/eric > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > > year of ortho. Guest guest
, Thanks for your reply. I do think that being able to take finals the following week sounds too good to be true, but to be honest, I'm not sure at this point what else I could do. For insurance reasons I need to have the surgery in Dec, and my surgeon only does these surgeries on Wednesdays, and of course dec 15, 22, and 29 were already taken! YIKES! So I think I'll have to beg my professors to work something out with me. Even if I could physically and mentally take a final 6 days post op, realistically I doubt I'll get much serious studying done so I probably wouldn't know the material well enough to take a test on it anyway. What a mess! At least stressing about school keeps me from getting nervous about surgery! Thanks again, > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > > > year of ortho. Even if I could physically and mentally take a final 6 days post op, realistically I doubt I'll get much serious studying done so I probably wouldn't know the material well enough to take a test on it anyway. What a mess! At least stressing about school keeps me from getting nervous about surgery! Guest guest
, In most cases you cannot drive until you are off of the pain meds, since these are generally considered narcotic. Can you take an incomplete and do you finals a month later? I did that for the summer session. I took 2 independendent study classes and took incompletes, this gave me an additional 20 days to complete everything and take the finals. I arranged all of this ahead of time with my advisor and professors. Marsha > > > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 > after a > > > > year of ortho. Guest guest
, Im sure you'll be able physically sit in a chair and " take " finals. But how much time will you be able to put into studying? Plus you might feel a little sleep deprived by then. Or maybe you will still be feeling icky from decongestants, etc. A strategy. Defintely start by telling the profs you will be having the surgery so they dont think its a last minute excuse. They might work with you if they have respect for you. If you have to, when finals come around, maybe you could enchance your puffy face and tired eyes for sympathy? And dont even think of using foundation or concealer or eyeliner! > > > > , > > > > Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
, One day of meds only! I'm having upper and genio in a month and am hoping everything goes as well as your recovery has. That's awsome to hear your doing so well. > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after a > > > year of ortho. Guest guest
nicole, while it's nice to have a distraction from surgery a six month setback in your education or taking lessor grades is a tough option. Hopefully you can work with the profs for maybe a staggered schedule. I don't know how many finals you have to take but maybe you could cram for some of the easier ones early and get them to let you take those before surgery allowing you to focus on the tough ones later. The only other option is to postpone surgery until summer. good luck with your dilemma/eric > > > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 > after a > > > > year of ortho. Guest guest
kelly, while my healing is going well the surgery didn't so having to do it again and again is starting to take it's toll. the best thing you can do is prepare for recovery by having plenty of yogurt on hand to counteract the antibiotics, bromelain to reduce swelling and bruising, liquid cal/mag to get you regular again after the opiates plug you up and rotating ice packs to help with the pain. I only had to take the pain meds at night for a few days to counter the pain in the throat from intubation cuz i had a small airway and the tube scratched the walls. Oh and the best part is have someone who knows how to make good creamed soups to keep the calories up. eric > > > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 > after a > > > > year of ortho. Guest guest
, thanks for the advice, sorry to hear about the continuous surgeries. Did you know in advance that you would have multiple surgeries? > > > > > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 > > after a > > > > > year of ortho.
