Guest guest
Dan, It takes between 6-8 weeks for the bone to heal completely. Depending on what your doctor's orders are though, you may be able to eat much sooner than that. I was allowed to eat anything I wanted at 3 weeks (I had lower advancement of 7 mm on Aug 24). Although it seems that most people are a little bit longer than 3 weeks. Applying pressure is not really a problem by the time you start eating food. Eating was a bit tricky at first, but more becuase of my muscles not functioning 100%, not becuase anything hurt or the pressure was too much. If my jaw is or was weaker, it didn't affect my eating. It just takes some getting used to. Kim > > I am very concerned with how I am going to be able to chew after I > have surgery on my lower jaw. Guest guest
As a veteran of lower advancement, I can say that it was a long time - - let's say a year -- before I was willing to take on a raw carrot or a clump of broccoli (and I adore raw broccoli). But I am a timid soul. I believe my surgeon would have encouraged it a lot before I actually did it. The bone heals in about 8 weeks. That said, at about seven months post op, I had a conversation about removing a troublesome wizzie with my surgeon. " We are not taking out any teeth today! " he said emphatically. I got the impression that even if we were to do it, he wanted to wait until things were more settled in and stable. As I understand it, the bone does eventually heal and put itself back together pretty substantially. At about a year post-op, I quit worrying about anything I wanted to chew. I do find that sometimes my jaw still tires easily, but it's no problem. I would also be certain that any dentist attempting any procedure on my mouth knows that I had the surgery, when and where, just in case. If my jawbone is weaker, I am not aware of it -- but I'd still want to be sure the doc knew.
