Guest guest
Cindy, I started losing my hair before i was two months out. i think the first time you lose hair is from the surgery itself and the second time is from the weight loss, that is only my opinion, my surgeon told me that it would help to increase my protein but i have found not even that to really help. but truly i think everyone is so different. why not get one before surgery?? 10-21-03 332-270-150 lapRNY

Guest guest
I actually had intended to not get the perm I had scheduled this week. However the morning of my appointment my hair looked so bad I said " Hell with it " . I decided to do it anyway and let the chips fall where they may (Or in this case the hair). My hair was so flat that it just looked like crap and I hated it. So I had a long talk with the girl who does my hair and she seemed to think it would be fine. Her only concern was that it might not " take " because of medication I was on. So I told her to go ahead and I would not hold her responsible. Well it turned out really good. In fact I would say it is one of the best perms I ever got. My hair seemed to curl more than normal (maybe because it is thinner than usual and it's not being so weighed down). I was worried the next day it would fall out more but interestingly enough it seems to have slowed down quite a bit. Maybe because with all of the pulling from the wrapping she pulled out everything that was ready to come out anyway. This is not to say that everyone will have the same results I did or that they should run out now and get a perm. Just relaying that for me it turned out just fine. I normally would go back next week and have it colored but I decided to wait an extra week. So in two weeks I will go back and get color and highlights. One weird thing did happen though. I had my eyebrows waxed while I was there. I usually get them done when I am getting my hair done. Normally it doesn't bother me and my skin doesn't even turn red. But for some reason (maybe because my skin is drier than usual?) it hurt and my skin around my eyebrows was bright red. So red that I could see it without my glasses on and I am blind as a bat without them!!!!! Candi Hair Question.... Hi! I am pre-op, approved but waiting for a date for surgery (they have said it will probably be within the next 3 weeks.) My question is about perms. I read on this list that you don't recommend having a perm during the phase where your hair is falling out. That makes sense. But what about getting one within the first couple months post-op before the loss starts? I am in a catch-22. It is too soon for me to get another perm now, but if I wait 7 months or more until the hair loss supposedly stops, I'll look like a shaggy dog! What should I do? And when does the hair loss usually start? Have any of you avoided the hair loss by bulking up on extra protein? Thanks for the advice...now that this is a reality for me, it is the little things that I have so many questions about!!! Guest guest
Cindy, Most people will tell you that hair loss starts about month 4...however, everyone is different. I started losing my hair at 1 month out after surgery and I'm STILL losing it at almost 7 months.....this just goes to stress that you cannot judge yourself by anyone else because everyone is completely different in their rates of loss, when things start falling out, what their doctors' tell them, etc. T. Guest guest
Hi. I am almost 4 months post op and I started to lose my hair at about 2 months. I have been using nioxin and I still see hair loss but I would hate to test it and not use the nioxin and then possibly lose even more than I am now. I have heard that when you first start lossing it is probably from the medications from the surgery. I too concentrate on my protein but am still losing. I think everyone is different cause I have a friend that does not eat as much protein as me and she is not losing any hair. Then I have seen people who have needed to purchase a wig. I have thick hair so my loss is not noticeable to anyone but me so far. I think you should talk with your hair dresser and let her make a professional opinion about it. Guest guest
Thank God for thick hair huh Shelly!!!! I have very thick hair as well. So I could notice it was thinner but no one else noticed unless they saw it in my pick when I was picking out my hair. Man I would have to clean it 3 times after every shower. When I had my perm last week the girl who does my hair only had to use one bottle of solution. She usually uses 2 full bottles so obviously I have a whole lot less hair. <Candi Re: Hair Question.... Guest guest
Ditto the " Thank God for thick hair " ! Actually my hair is very fine, but I always had tons of it. I sure have noticed the loss starting at almost exactly three months out but no one else does unless I point it out to them. I changed my part to better " disguise " the thinning areas and I have to remember the mousse to puff it up a tad. Now I'm just over five months out and I can honestly say that the loss is pretty much over, the hair in my comb is just normal loss. Now I get to peer in the mirror to look for the regrowth! Guest guest
I think it is because our skin is more dry. I have been moisturizing like a mad woman and my skin is still dry!!!
