Guest guest
I read an article in " Physical " magazine today at the gym wherein a man, weighing 195 at 5'10 " , asked how to promote the gain of lean muscle mass and the loss of fat stores. The advisor replied that he should up his protein to 1 gm per pound of body weight, or 195 gm protein per day. This includes food sources and protein drinks. Doesn't this seem like an awful lot? I think I take in about 65 gm a day. If I took in 1gm per pound of (ideal) body weight, I would have to up it to 180 gm. I'd be drinking shakes all day! Hmmm...I wonder if this advice is sound. But it's probably not too far off the mark. I do know that there are some bariatric surgeons out there advising their post-op patients to do 180g of protein daily ! That may be a bit excessive to my way of thinking, (a lot depends on how distal you are) but I myself do 120g daily in protein shakes alone. I don't bother counting protein grams from food bcuz I assume 120 is probably enuf for me. I'm not body-building or anything. I do feel that 60g is probably kind of low. The dieticians in the hospital program where I had my surgery done recommended 60g a day as a minimum to shoot for. But I found out later that a lot of the advice they were handing out was based on " normie " nutrition and they didn't know a heckuva lot about post-ops like us. They WERE recommending TWO multi-vitamins a day bcuz we don't absorb everything we consume. So in MY pea-brain, it seemed like we should be doing twice as much protein (just like twice as many multi-vit's), since that seems to be what most think we malabsorb, middle of the road--justa about half of everything. Now, you will find all KINDS of variations on this theme and lots of people being very adamant on one side or another. So I try to go down the middle and then season it with a bit of common sense and see where it gets me when I have my lab tests done. I'll betcha Vitalady has some answers on this; have you asked her? Guest guest
I am distal, but I do between 210 and 240 grams of protein shakes daily. My protein levels are always low..but my albumin levels are fine, which makes me believe I'm doing okay. Go by your labs, and how you feel. I DO think 65 grams is low for anyone...even the shortest proxy. If you had an RNY, you don't have the duodenum to absorb food type protein, so that should never be counted toward your daily totals. Take care~ Regards~ Jacque Distal RNY, 5/30/00 Drs.
