OWWW!

Only person who comes to mind is (Minirascal). I know she's

been on a soft and/or liquid diet for several years because of her

problematic joints, but I don't think she had to do IV feedings. She

doesn't post terribly often any more, but you might try e-mailing

her, or directing a post to her attention.

Sorry you're having such trouble. Do the docs say anything about WHY

you can't swallow? It may be very usual; I'm just not aware of it.

I'll bet you're ready to get rid of the hardware!

Best,

Cammie

Well I haven't had distraction, I had lower advancement, SARPE and

genio 4 months ago. I remember having problems swallowing up until a

couple of weeks after surgery, they told me due to the tube that

goes down through your nose for anastesia and/or to pump blood out

of your stomach. did you get general anastesia for your distraction?

Perhaps it's the tube. After a month or so after I noticed that

while the pain had gone, I still had (and have) problems with my

throat, like there is some sort of " bump " in my throat and also I

noticed that when I talk continuously, my voice just disappears all

of a sudden. I have an appointment with a throat nose and ear doctor

in november. I did my own research a bit on the net, and I think my

irritation is due to that tube that went down my throat with the

surgery. It could be that my vocal cords have developed a bit of

scar tissue because the edge of the tube irritated the vocal cords.

I hope it's just that, there are a number of more serious things

(like paralysis of a vocal cord) that you can get from a simple

thing like that tube through your throat, you don't wanna know!

Since I also sing a bit, I immediately noticed that my range had

also changed, I couldn't get the high notes out anymore... I was

really disappointed so I want to find out what can be done. The

swallowing itself is not a problem, I do notice that when I turn my

head to the left, I feel no " lump " in my throat, but when I turn my

head to the right, I do feel like there is something stuck in my

throat. The ENT-doctor is probably going to lower a camera down my

throat and see what's up...not really something I'm looking forward

to but hey, what can you do? My complaints are not really major,

especially compared to your situation! probably if I wouldn't sing,

I'd leave it like this for a little while longer and see what

happens...

I wish you all the luck in the world with your distraction, and hope

the problem goes away quickly.

Hi Ellyn,

I've been through two distractions on my lower jaw, the first to

advance my mandible and the second to reconstruct the condyles. I

had the last distraction in January and the devices were removed in

April. It was a very difficult and painful experience but well worth

it in the end for me.

I had some trouble swallowing but not to the extent you do. I did

get IV fluids for the first week or two because I had a hard time

getting down (and keeping down) enough fluids. Things got a lot

better after all the hardware came out. I still tend to choke a

little more easily but I think my muscles are still adjusting to

their new positions. I still have alot of numbness as well. The

right side of my mouth didn't move at all right after the surgery

but it's improving slowly even six months after the last procedure.

I'm now able to chew small bites of soft food which is a huge

improvement for me. I still have one surgery left to fix my open

bite after which my surgeon expects me to be able to eat an almost

normal diet.

Good luck with the removal of the distractors tomorrow. For me, the

removal was very easy (nothing like getting them put in) and I was

able to resume my normal activities in about 10 days.

Keep us updated. I hope everything goes well for you.
