Hi,

I was wondering if anyone new if it was possible to have lingual

braces(the ones of the back of the teeth) if your having Orthognathic

surgery? Are the braces used to move the jaw during surgery or are

hooks attached to teeth prior to the op, Thanks alot.

It is possible. There has been at least one member of this group who

did it that way, and was truly pleased with the braces and the

surgery.

Warning: I have heard that the lingual ones are more expensive, move

the teeth more slowly -- and are more difficult to adjust to.

(Myself, I can't imagine having all that hardware next to my tongue

for several years.)

But possible? Yep, if that's what you really want. I don't know that

it's possible with all orthos and surgeons, but it can be done.

And I believe that the braces are there during surgery mainly to

stabilize things and give the surgeon places to attach whatever wires

or elastics. Sometimes they even cut the archwires in the process of

surgery.

Do remember, though, that most of us have a real bugabear about how

other folks are going to see us in braces. Surprisingly enough, most

other folks don't even notice, and if they do mention it, it's

usually because they want to have something done themselves, but are

struggling to get up the nerve to undertake it.
