Guest guest
Joe, if the surgery requires you to move your lower jaw forward, you've most likely got an overjet (although most people call it overbite, which is something a bit different). it's shocking how frequently some of these orthos recommend surgery... how bad is your overjet? there are many risks involved in the surgery, including the possibility of PERMANENT numbness in certain areas of your face (gums, lips, chin, tongue)... here is my story: my ortho and surgeon recommended lower jaw advancement surgery for my 10mm overjet; however, after 10 months in braces, my overjet was only 5mm. my looks improved greatly. stupidly, i still agreed to the surgery to correct my overjet, which was only 5mm... i'm about 5.5 months postop, and i looked a lot better BEFORE the surgery, with the 5mm overjet. luckily, i all my numbness subsided within 3.5 months; however, my face is now asymmetrical after the surgery. it's best to understand the risks and rewards of the surgery... i would not recommend the surgery unless you have an extreme situation... if your ortho is saying that the surgery is not compulsory, then i would NOT get the surgery.. good luck! > > Hi my name is joe and I am considering having jaw surgery. Guest guest
Hi Joe, I just had Bilateral Mandibular Sagital Split/Advancement Oct 14th. It is a serious operation but it is very common. Here is a little history on me. I had a severe underjet before starting braces. I am not sure of the actual size, but put it this way my dentist recommended me to see an orthodontist because he felt that the I was in need of the operation that I ultimately had because my bite was soooooooo bad so if he could see it just at a regular appointment I thought it needed some looking into. After braces of about 1 yr, (my ortho is wonderful) the movement that was necessary to fix my bite was only about 4MM, which wasn't a whole lot in my Oral Surgeons opinion......but after dealing with the whole trauma of childhood and the name calling " Bucky " and such it was enough for me. Anyway, I am 1 week and 2 days post surgery. The operation was a success and absolutely no complications arose. I went in at 2:30 (the actual procedure took about 2 hrs) and I was out by 2:30 the next day. I was actually wanting to leave earlier. My lower portion of my face was and still is numb. It is kinda annoying but I rather feel numbness than pain. Feeling is slowly coming back though. MY OS said he didn't even see the nerve that runs through the jaw which is a good thing because he most likely didn't damage it. I wasn't wired when the procedure was over but I went to the OS Thursday and my jaw had shifted and they needed to put rubber bands on to realign the jaw to be sure it heals in th right position. Even though I am not completely healed and I have a long way to go and am still swollen and uncomfortable I would do it again in a second. My teeth actually touch without any effort on my part to make them do it. I don't know what I will ultimately look like but I am ecstatic at what I see now. Hope this helps joemillller wrote: Hi my name is joe and I am considering having jaw surgery. My orthodontist has recommended that I have it because I have a overbite.
