Guest guest
Hi Joe Just because a surgeon states that he has done thousands of these does not mean the will be no complications. I had to think long and hard about my decision. There are many factors when it comes to possible " complications " the surgeon has to be skilled in what he/she is doing and this will be up to you to try and research, they look at your age and they look at your general health.........they stress that you not be a smoker. There is no cut and dry answer it is completely personal. I weighed all the risks and felt like they were enough for me to deal with if something went wrong. My reasons were emotional as well as physical and medical when I decided for the procedure. Being teased and such for my appearance. This is what makes surgery such a difficult decision especially if you are the one ultimately making that decision. And yes the Dr's who do these surgeries are confident in their work but do not go to a Dr who will tell you he is soooooo good that there will be no problems. I believe a good surgeon will tell you the risks and possible complications. It is your choice. If you are happy with the way you look right now then don't do it but if you agree with what the ortho is saying and you are willing to accept the risks then go for it. Also, if you are not comfortable with the oral surgeon that you went to try another one and see what they say. Second opinions never hurt. joemillller wrote: I have been doing alot of research on this surgery (sagittal split). I have to admit is seems very scary. I wonder why the orthodontist and maxillo facial surgeon think it is best when there are so many risks involved. Are they that confident in themselves that there should be no problems or should one be reluctant to proceed with this operation? Just sufing the web I have come across many that would advise against it, or are bad outcomes the only ones who post. I wonder if 8 or 9 out of 10 are actually happy with their outcome with no complications and would actually do it again. I am not sure I want to have a surgery to correct something for just personal reasons vs medical reasons. The surgeon I met with stated he has done thousands of these. Does that mean there will be no problems??

Guest guest
Joe, Do you have an oral surgeon? What does he say? I was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea a few years ago. Before CPAP could even be an option, I had to have a Spetoplasty to striaghten my nose so I could breathe through it. CPAP has been somewhat effective, but left me diasapointed and still tired. Almost two years ago I looked into the surgery route. The Ear Nose and Throat doctor told me a UPP would be ineffective for me since neither my tonsils, adnoids or uvula were part of the problem. He thought a jaw advancement would work for me. The oral surgeon agreed, but I needed braces first. It's been more than a year in braces, but I hope to have the surgery in Nov. or Dec. It all seems a little scary, but I beleive because of my anatomy, it will prove very effective. > > I have been doing alot of research on this surgery (sagittal split). > I have to admit is seems very scary.
