Guest guest
Hey Zulu, you mentioned you would not having done the surgery. Is this only because of the way it turned out esthetically? Is the surgery and everything to follow really all that bad? If you liked the way it turned out would it have been worth it then?

Is > this only because of the way it turned out esthetically? YES. I did the surgery purely for cosmetic reasons. I didn't like my severe overjet, which was about 10mm. The outcome of the surgery was a MUCH thinner looking face - almost to a point of looking unhealthy. My point is that i looked very good after the orthodontics took my overjet from 10mm to 5mm, but the surgery, which fully corrected the overjet, made me look worse than with the 5mm overjet. Additionally, i had a resulting ASYMMETRY from the surgery. This is extremely upsetting considering i had perfect symmetry before the operation. I'm about 5.5 months postop and have requested my ortho to expand my arches as much as he can; consequently, i will be in braces for at least another 7 months. So, my final results could still change... After seeing your pics, i can assure you that you will look different if you have the surgery. Like me, you've already got a strong chin. Bringing you jaw forward is going to make is even stronger and make your face longer and thinner. > surgery and everything to follow really all that bad? Not really. In fact, there was no pain at all. But these are the postop challenges: 1. Swelling: it did not start to subside till the 3rd week. 2. Weight loss: I lost 10lbs 3. Out of work for 2 weeks > the way it turned out would it have been worth it then? YES, but i was fortunate to have full sensation back in my lips and chin within 3.5 months. The biggest improvement that I found was the improvement to my profile. Like flipguy, i'm an engineer, and we're known to be perfectionists and obsessed with detail. You've seen my before and after pics. The swelling on one side has gone down a bit and i'll send new pics when my buddy gets back from Hawaii with my digital camera.... I believe you will look quite different after your surgery, even if you've only got 4mm overjet. I think the only challenge you face is the possibility of permanent numbness. If your surgeon is cognizant of the nerve, i'm sure he can be very gentle with it...
