Please give me your opinion. I'm in my early 30's, live alone and have a full-time job and am 3 weeks post-op after upper and lower jaw surgery (and a bone harvest from my hip). My only regret is that I didn't have the procedure done when I was your age. Consider that -- you are young, you heal much quicker than us older folk; -- you presumably have the day-to-day support of your family; -- you will only miss a few weeks of school, so what, you have no concerns about employment; -- lower jaw (mandibular) surgery is quite safe, there aren't as many blood vessels around the lower jaw as the upper jaw; -- the surgical procedure for lower jaw surgery is simpler than upper surgery, you won't be under general anaesthesia as long as I was and no bone graft will be necessary; -- the mandibular surgery combined with the orhodonty will give you a great result; -- many people report than removal of severely impacted wisdom teeth is only a little less uncomfortable than a mandibular osteotomy. How much weight you lose depends largely on how well you manage your liquid and soft food diet. After three weeks on a liquid diet I have lost less than 1kg and I'm not a heavy person and have a fast metabolism. Don't accept that you necessarily lose 2,4,5,6 or whatever kilos. Sure there will be some post-operative discomfort and the diet can get boring and you may miss your usual activities and favorite foods but it's only temporary. It will pass. Being nervous is normal, I was very nervous. I can tell you -- with the benefit of hindsight -- that my nervousness was excessive. My opinion is that it is worth it, that you are probably in as close to ideal circumstances as possible and it will greatly improve the results of the orthodonty. If I were you, I'd go for it. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns that I an help you with. God Bless
