I had a goal size: 12. That's the thinnest I had ever been, so that's what " thin " was for me. I'm 5'8 " tall and started out at 260, wearing 22/24s. I reached the size 12goal at seven months postop and thought I was done -- bought alot of new clothes, had my brachioplasty, got ready to settle down into my new forever size. Ha! I went on to lose another 50 pounds. I blew past that goal so fast I never got to enjoy it. All those new size 12's went to consignment shops to be swapped out for 6's and 4's. Now I wear a 4, a 6, or sometimes an 8 blouse (for the new post-plastics rack!) Pretty wild. hugs, Ann

Guest guest
My " goal " sort of morphed as I did. I started out at 310, and figured if I could get down to 180, I would have been happy. The doc, before surgery, said I'd probably be in a size 8. I chuckled to myself...and said.. " in my dreams! " I don't ever remember wearing a size 8...not even at age 10 or 11! Then, when I got down a little below 180, I was thinking MORE was possible. Then, the doc asked me what my personal goal was. I took a wild stab at 155. Never remember weighing less than that in my mature body. (From age 11 upward.) He said he felt that was reasonable. Well, 155 came and went...and, I will be 3 years out soon, I am at 126 and in a size 4-6. I'm now living my wildest dreams! I'm 5'6 " . Regards~ Jacque Distal RNY, 5/30/00 Drs. Guest guest
Ok Ill take a stab at this lol The reason I chose my goal of being 150 is because its 50 lbs from 200 lbs. I never ever want to be any were near the 200 +++++++ mark again. My ideal goal would be 140 t0 145, But I think 150 & 155 is reasonable and obtainable. I wont consider im at goal tell I reach 150 lol. Ive been sitting at 165 for ten weeks now. Its driving me crazy Debby R (wa) > >To: Graduate-OSSG >Subject: How did YOU choose your goal? Guest guest
I based my goal on something a skinny girl in high school said: she said no one should weigh more than 120 lbs., that there was absolutely no reason to weigh more than that. At the high school I attended there was a particularly vicious level of competiton among the girls on a physical level. It was okay to get bad grades, be rude to people, but boy, you better look good!!! I was overweight at the time, but not morbidly obese yet. Even though I knew that what she said was really stupid, mean and not based in reality, it made me so mad, it stuck in my head forever. When I had my WLS (at age 44, 5ft, 5 in) my goal was 120, even though I was fully aware that it was a number based on emotion and not common sense. I didn't fully expect to get there, and agreed I would stop when my body was ready. My underlying goal was to get so skinny I looked sickly (I know, I know). Watch what you pray for. I actually did get close to my goal weight at 128, but I am definately done. I am at a size I thought I would never see in my lifetime (2-6), but I got pretty sick getting there. However, I would do it all again, temporary malnutrition and all. I'm not sure what the moral of this story is. BarbaraJean distal, 40 " common channel from 300 to 128 How did YOU choose your goal? Guest guest
In the beginning, I never really had a " goal, " just to go wherever it took me. Then a year later, at my follow-up visit with Dr Gagner, after my transection, he asked me if I had a goal. (I was about 235 lbs. then, 5'6 " ). I sort of shrugged and said I'd love to get to 150, but 175 would be fine. He nodded and said that's very realistic and attainable. Several months later, I hit 185 and stayed there for over a year, and figured that was my set-point, that's it. I must admit, I was slightly disappointed at not hitting that 175, but whatever. Then, one day, I decided to give up my oatmeal for breakfast, and had a protein shake instead. Within a few months, I had dropped 20 pounds, if you remember me posting this. Then the abdominoplasty, and down another 10 lbs. to about 155. I've been very bad lately, back up to 160. Kind of waiting for my insurance mess to get cleaned up, to hear about my External Review for the breast reduction, the complaint I filed with the state against my ins. co., etc. It's the waiting. I know, I know, just excuses. in NJ

Guest guest
My surgeon gave me a goal of 125 lbs. The middle of the recommended weight for my height. I never weighed this in my adult life and didn't think it was realistic for a nearly 40 year old woman. My personal goal was 150 lbs. That put me in a size 12 and small enough to move around without shortness of breath and joint pain. 18 months later, I am 130-135 lbs (depending on the time of the month) and wearing a size 4-6. Now I am completely obsessed with that 125 lb goal. sigh. Feeling like a failure for not being able to shed that last 5-10lbs. How crazy is that? Guest guest
That's not crazy at all. That's exactly why I think it's very wrong and even irresponsible of doctors to give patients a goal weight. All to often even the most compliant patient can get nowhere near that number. Guest guest
Weird psychological goal? 120 lbs - based on my early youth reading of " Call of the Wild " in which they refer to a beautiful woman as weighing 120 lbs. and that being too much weight for the sled dogs to pull. Have never been able to shake that as the ideal weight for me (I weighed about 125 at that time and was 12)! Surgeon's goal: 130, based on my height My first dream goal: Size 14 My personal goal: Size 8 Current stats: Size 10-12 Kate

Guest guest
I first set a goal of 122 because that's what all the " charts " say I should weigh for my height, and that's what I weighed when I got married. About my 3rd month after wls, my surgeon asked if I had thought about a goal. When I told him, he said that was too low and that I should aim for 135. He said I would probably not be healthy and look sickly at 122. I thought he was nuts but I figured I would just see when I got there. He was right. I reached my goal of 135 at about 11½ months and about that same time I quit losing (perfect timing, huh?) Any lower and I really would look too thin and not be very healthy. I try to keep my weight in the mid 130's now. My surgeon told me that when we are morbidly obese our bodies adjust to the extra weight by adding tissue and bone, etc. to help support all that extra weight. Although after wls we lose weight, it is fat, not bone and tissue. That's why a lot of us are in smaller clothes than we were before, but weigh much more. The last time I wore a size 6 I weighed about 110. Now - size 6 is 135 lbs. Guest guest
Hey Guys.... I chose my goal 145 (I'm 5'6 " ) just at random, my Dr. suggested 157 and I thought perhaps a size 8 -10 would do for me.... actually my real thought was if I can just not screw this whole thing up and end up fatter I'll be happy... but my fairy tale goal was and still is 145. I started out at 289 in October of 2001 and currently floating around 169-172. Wearing a solid size 12 and still find myself wondering if 'this store' will carry my size, and still being careful when I eat in public, and still feeling like I'm an imposter when people don't realize I'm " really " a MO in a strangers body. But life is getting easier, working out now is a part of my life something I would have NEVER thought about before. This week I re started on protien and am currently trying out several (Thanks to Vitalady). And being more aware of my carbs, including jelly beans :z Bad I know... but one thing I have learned this past year and a half is.... to BE Happy no matter what the stupid scale says, and no matter what other people say, and no matter what thoughts come. We are all beautiful people, blessed to be alive on this earth, w/ the gift of life that we should ENJOY. I was going to try out Yoga this week, made it to the gym, laid out my little mat like everyone else, only to have Horror strike when the very nice instructor said " Welcome to POWER YOGA " !!! I was of course too embarrassed to leave so I stayed and was laughing so hard at the end at what a fool I must look like.... but I MADE it w/o passing out so that's always a good day at the gym! I am however still sore and this was TWO Days ago... who knew my intercostals could hurt so much!!! But it was really very good... perhaps I'll tre REGULAR Yoga on Sunday. Well this is getting long... Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.... enjoying the SPRING here..... Warmest Regards Sondra ~ Atlanta, GA RNY 10/01 289/169 5'6 "
