Gayle I just had labs as well and that is the area for me that is down at

three years post op. It has been a long slow slide for me and kept hoping

that what I was told (close your eyes ) by the surgeon's staff that

Iron would be an issue for me as I am male and far beyond having regular

cycles,,,,,yanno what I mean? Nonetheless,,,,the slide is there and the

last # was 26 down from 270 or so three years back.

Bless my PCP but when I had a consult with him and brought it up he did not

seem alarmed or really concerned and said that it probably had nothing to do

with the RNY three years ago, but was a result of my open heart surgery six

months ago and would probably bounce right back up. Yet, there I sat with

all my labs on a printed Excel spreadsheet pointing to the decline in

progress far longer back than the last surgery.

Yep, I got the fatigue, the lack of focus (that may be due to age and a

lifelong condition of mania,,,,LOL) and concentration. I have never been a

napper, and now,,,just when I am trying to get back into the gym, pace is

picking up in professional affairs and my home honeydo's are on a list

longer than my character defects,,,,,I have to crash nearly every

afternoon.......:(

So, independent of what the good PCP says I am doing Iron supplements and

will march back in there in three months to get it tested again along with a

few other things that were still in normal range, but not where I want them.

On that subject, I am a monthy injector of B-12 and work at keeping it

mid-range tween 600-700, and in spite of that I dropped to just over

500,,,,,,so I am tweaking that as well,,,,think I will do it every three

weeks,,,,for awhile,,,and check again in three months or so.

I can really use some feedback on this. I'm almost 2 years post-op. I

recently had some bloodwork done. The only problem is low ferritin levels.

My ferritin number is 10. What does that mean? Could it account for the

fatique and general lack of concentration I've been experiencing. I noticed

my PCP put down " anemia " under diagnosis, but he really did not have much to

say about it. And, totally out of character for me, I didn't ask many

questions (must be the fatigue and lack of concentration). He did increase

my iron supplement. Your thoughts are important to me. Thanks.

Add me to that list, too. At 3 1/2 yrs. post-op, my labs in January

showed a drop in Ferritin from 31 last year to 18 this year (10 is

anemic). Had I not checked my own labs for trends, I would never

have known. My doc just scans the labs to see if everything is in

the " normal " ranges. But, I was supposed to be taking 2 iron pills a

day and have only been doing 1. So, now it's back to 2, with C, like

a good girl. We'll see.

Eyes and mouths open...I knew there was something I liked about you guys.

The sight to see what the problem is, and the voice to ask pertinent

questions and voice an intelligent opinion and give valuable advice. I never

learned anything by closing my eyes and keeping my mouth shut, unless it

happened to interfere with my hearing. :)

Well, it should mean hemachromatosis, but it took fully 3 yrs before I could

anyone interested in testing for that specifically,. I think when I hit

doctor #9, she said, maybe you should see a hematologist?

REALLY? Maybe I shoulda seen one in 1999. LOL!

Anyway, I do NOT have the genetic marker for it. That is really a very good

thing because one son lives in Spain & I might have some trouble getting

that across to him.

The question is, kinda how it got so high, but then, I am DISTAL RNY, ergo,

no way I can iron from food & should even have trouble getting it from

supplements! But after all this time, I still haven't used it up. I don't

even take a multi with iron, and there is NOOOOOO chance of my getting it

from food, since I don't even have a lower stomach now, let alone not

sending the food there AND I don't even LIKE iron foods. (ok, except

spinach, which is on the no-no list for oxalates).

So, I must just be some sorta iron magnet. Whatever, at least I don't have

to worry about getting the iron in separately, for the moment.

Thanks,
