Guest guest
Hi there, I am just over 2 weeks post op. I had both upper and lower jaw surgery. I have lost approx 10 to 15 pounds depending on when I weigh myself. Prior to surgery I had a very healthy appetite. I would eat all day long and still be hungry. Now I have a hard time eating 3 square meals. I seem to have lost my appetite. I want to regain the weight back as I was fairly slim to begin with. Have any other members lost as much weight as I have? Did anyone else experience drastic change in appetite? Thank you.

Guest guest
yes, I lost about 20 lbs. Eating was such a chore that sometimes it just wasn't worth it. I too had upper/lower with incredible swelling which prevented me from getting even liquids down. I think that perhaps our stomachs shrink, too and maybe thats why you have lost your appetite. I normally weight about 120. As soon as I started eating solid food, it only too about 3 weeks to put the weight back on (solids at 7 weeks). My biggest complaint about losing the weight was that my clothes hung like flour sacks on me. I am female so it wasn't too bad, but if you are a guy it probably a bigger deal. > > Hi there, > > I am just over 2 weeks post op. I had both upper and lower jaw > surgery. Guest guest
Thanks for the reply. Boy am I glad Im not alone on this. Yes I am a male. I think you are right our stomachs do shrink. Prior to surgery I could drink 500ml of water in one go. Now I can barely stomach 250ml. I know I have lost some fat but I have also lost muscle. If losing the weight wasnt already bad enough I also feel physcially weaker. Prior to surgery I use to do a little weight training. Nothing to heavy just enough to keep somewhat in shape. Im afraid to even attempt to lift the barbell at the weight I had it prior to surgery. I feel as though it would just slam down on me like a ton of bricks. Is it to early to start up weight training? I just feel I need to counter the effects. Thanks again. > > > > Hi there, > > > > I am just over 2 weeks post op. I had both upper and lower jaw > > surgery. Guest guest
Hi, sorry to butt in, but I also lost weight and appetite post-op. In total, 12 pounds (midlife weight gain that I could afford to lose and which has stayed thanks to dietary changes). I didn't have much of an appetite either, but I thought of everything as medicine for healing and I tried to take in as much as I could. I got particularly messed up in the wine dept as good wine tasted like cheap plonk for quite awhile. Your taste buds kind of get messed up, and with your body still trying to eliminate the anaesthesia, it's no surprise your appetite gets messed up too. Please, please, don't do weights until you've cleared it with your surgeon. The bones take at least 6-8 weeks to properly heal. Your muscles will come back, your energy will come back, but honestly, you don't want to do this twice, I'm sure. You need to take it easy and let your body recover. My cranial massage therapist pointed out something extremely interesting last visit - she does an arm pulling exercise (for the nerve in my arms and wrists), and she asked me where I could feel it. I said " I feel it in my face! " Sure enough, what she was doing was having an impact on the muscles of my face, right up to the forehead. It's amazing how interconnected these things are. Anyway, my advice on that is you don't want to be putting any excessive strain on the muscles that are holding your newly aligned jaws in place. For me, once I got past the first week on a liquid diet, and was able to " soft chew " food, things started to get back to normal and my weight stabilized. I was almost 47 when I had the surgery, not very athletic but in pretty good shape (daily yoga practice) and a high energy person. It does take quite awhile to get your full energy back. You've had major surgery, and even though it's not necessarily visible on the outside, there is a LOT of healing going on. > > > > > > Hi there, > > > > > > I am just over 2 weeks post op. Guest guest
Boy did I ever! My first week post-op I hardly ate 300 calories a day because I had ZERO appetite, but I drank about a gallon of water a day because I was more parched than hungry. Two weeks later I was consuming close to 1200 calories a day: not even close to what I should be eating for optimum healing. ADVICE: Eat/drink plenty of nutritious calories with protein, carbs, and good fats. Why? Because healing takes up a lot of calories; your body is working overtime to repair itself.Take a multivitamin any form you can (liquid, etc.) Seek help from a nutritionist if you can. Also, some of us in this group have benefitted from protein/weight gain shakes, check the labels for nutrition content. Anyway my weight leveled for a while after losing 11 lbs. To get more calories I drank 2% milk instead of my usual skim; I had 3 Ensure Plus shakes, too. After I got unwired at 6weeks post-op, I consumed more protein and good fats, and also more sweet potatoes (my favorite!) and plenty of protein! I am 9 weeks post-op and I lost about 13 lbs total, and have not regained it yet. Changes in appetite: Gone are most of my carb cravings, mostly because chewing bagels, fries, pizza (crust), and most bread is still difficult. > > Hi there, > > I am just over 2 weeks post op. Guest guest
I think it is too early for you to weight train. You should give your body time to heal. Prior to my surgery, I lifted weights 3x a week, did aerobics 3x a week and was probably in the best physical condition of my life. So when I lost 20 lbs, I lost most of my muscle tone. The body will feed on muscle if there is no food. At 10 weeks, I just went back to the gym yesterday. You could probably start back quicker than I did, but I lost my motivation. Check with your doctor. Good luck. Pam > > > > > > Hi there, > > > > > > I am just over 2 weeks post op. I had both upper and lower jaw > > > surgery.
