Guest guest
Debbi Nobody told me ahead of time this could happen. I had lower abdominal pain below the waist a few inches down from one of the small incisions. Felt like a knife dipped in alcohol and stabbed in the belly. It was a very stabbing, stinging, burning pain that did cause spasms. After checking around, I was not alone. My surgeon explained that they make as small an incision as possible in the muscle to insert instruments but through the use of these instruments the incision can tear further. Shortly after surgery, as the muscle is healing/scarring, the nerves are 'waking up' and trying to reroute through/around scarring. He recommended heating pad and assured me it would go away. I suppose this process lasted about two weeks +/- a few days. I grew up in the south where I toted a huge glass of iced tea around with me everywhere. Being diabetic and a smoker my thirst was sometimes unquenchable and I was used to guzzling from a large glass of anything put to my lips. It only took a few absent minded attempts at this to cure me. Sip, Sip Sip slowly and frequently. I only missed eating briefly. I sit in a restaurant with others and think to myself I used to eat what was on their plate and want more. Im so thankful now that so little satisfies me. Tell your son the last bite tastes no different than the first and to savor each. God Bless Philip for getting this tool so young. He has such possibilities he never dreamed of ahead of him. As he becomes a LOSER like the rest of us, his confidence, self-esteem and more will improve. He will find many activities to replace the food he now misses. I truly hope he includes a support group in his road to recovery to make the most of his journey. ~~Pat~~ Orlando, FL 252/204/160 BMI 37/ 52 Years Young LAP-RNY 12/10/03 Wayne English, MD Ft Lauderdale, FL Message: 14 Date: Mon, 01 Mar 2004 01:35:19 -0000 From: dmks919@... Subject: post op Hi All, My name is Debbi, and I'm new to the group. My son, Philip, who will be 17 yrs old in June, had the bypass surgery last Monday 2/23. He was in Lenox Hill Hospital (we live on Long Island) and his surgeon is the same doctor who operated on Al Roker. He is 6'1 " tall and was 318 lbs the morning of his surgery. He is having a very difficult time with the abdominal pain and is getting depressed over not feeling well already (even though I remind him it's not even a week yet). He misses eating a bit, but even more so he misses drinking a big glass of " anything " . I showed him the group, and he looked around the site but hasn't joined in. Anyone care to share their " post op " pains and sufferings to help my son deal with the enormity of it all? My love and support go out to all. Thanks, Debbi

Guest guest
Debbi, Tell Philip that I also had abdominal pain....gas pain to be more specific...horrible, gut wrentching, felt like I was gonna die pain, for at least a week after my 1st surgery. I had complications and actually had to have a second surgery....I thought my bowels would NEVER start working again. Only once did I succumb to the pain and moan in desperation... " what have I done??????? " It DOES get better! SOOOO much better, and I would gladly do it all again, a thousand times over to have the results and feel the way I feel now. I missed drinking large volumes at once also. But tell Philip that now, at 9 months post op....I can literally drink 32 ounces of water in about 2 minutes. The body adapts and liquids begin to go down as quick as you drink them! Thats why it is so important to drink non calorie stuff....I am SOOO excited for him that he didn't have to wait till he was 31 years old to begin his life! In 6 months he will be SOOO grateful for this surgery and all the ways his life has changed. I can bike ride for miles on end now. I can hike up a mountain....I can fit into a size 14....I can work out for 2 hours, all the things I have only dreamed about....Keep your chin up Philip....it goes faster than you can imagine. You WILL feel normal again....Promise. Feel free to e-mail me anytime!
