Guest guest
I think the best person to ask this question of is your surgeon and/or ortho. They are supposed to advise you of all of the risks associated with this type of surgery. I was given a pamphlet by my ortho that stated that treatment could indeed make my TMJ worse. At the week-before-surgery appointment with my surgeon, he also made me sign a consent form stating that he had discussed all of the risks with me. In the end, I had to make that lonely and often scary decision of what to do. My understanding is that yes, it can go either way, better or worse. But for most of us, the possibility that it will make things better is worth the risk. And for most, things do get better. > > Is it true that if you don't have TMJ and you have surgery that you > may end up with it afterwards. If so, What would cause this to happen? Guest guest
I had something like this happen to me. I never really had TMJ pain prior to my surgery in July, I had some popping and my jaw would lock or dislocate occasionally. but nothing unbearable. My principle reason for doing this was that some of my upper teeth were coming loose and I was concerned about losing them in the future. After the surgery, about 5 weeks, I started to suffer from excrutiating joint pain. Literaly unbearable. I was taking 6 to 7 percocet a day and barely controlling the pain. It turned out to be a dislocated cartiladge. I was treated and escaped a second surgery. worse case scenario would have been arthroscopic surgery to correct it. I am happy to say that everything worked out and I am pain free, but post-op TMJ is probably a minor risk for anyone who undergoes this kind of surgery Marsha > > Is it true that if you don't have TMJ and you have surgery that you > may end up with it afterwards.
