Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I found your post - it was great. I see the Os tomorrow and want to ask him about pain meds. I composed a longer reply to you but hit the wrong button so I think it's gone. Guess i am still a bit out of it. Apologies if this is the second post. Just wanted to say that at this stage (5 days post op) other people's experience is VERY reassuring and I hope to help other people when I am in your position. -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " Kathleen Skambis " <kskambis@y...> wrote: > > I posted a lengthy message to you in response to another message re. > 6 weeks numbness and swelling. Guest guest
, Glad to see you made it through ok! I had upper only on Dec 8. I totally agree, not speaking is very upsetting and frustrating! I am tightly banded with a splint in the middle, so I can't speak very well. Thankfully I haven't had to leave the house yet since getting home from the hospital on Thursday, but even talking to my family is tough. I have to go to school on tuesday to take a final and hold office hours as well (i'm in grad school), and i'm definitely not looking forward to that! What I also find upsetting is not being able to eat. Drinking all your meals just isn't as filling as actually eating. I find myself " eating " 6 times a day and I'm still losing weight. What is especially upsetting is watching my family eat. We had a sit-down at the table type dinner last night and I cried. It's so hard to watch them eat and not be able to do the same. Then we had a conversation about what christmas cookies to make this year...not like it matters to me! My biggest complaint thus far has been congestion. It seems to get especially bad right when I want to try to get some sleep. Tonight seems better so far but I know the minute I try to fall asleep I'll be all stuffed up again! Anyway, just thought I'd commiserate with you a bit! We'll make it through...hang in there!! > > I had upper. lower and genio on December 7. Surgery was long > (8 hours) but seemed to please OS. Guest guest
, I find not communicating the hardest thing. My friends are being really good at listening to the runts I make and interpreting them but it is tough. I get what you say about constant eating. as soon as one thing is over, the next is on the horizon. and vanilla Ensure is not the most attractive prospect. i have not been too bad so far with congestion. I take liquid sudafed once a day just before bedtime. I am paranoid about getting a cold though - i can't imagine what breathing would be like. I am also finding the emotional swings really hard (I have been told this os post steroidal). I am trying not to think of Christmas and what will happen. I am wired shut for the next 6 weeks or so so I guess my turkey will be in soup form. seeing the OS today so I hope all is well and that my work gets a pass. I am rinsing a lot with saline solution; i have a small syringe with a curved tip which is really handy. Today is the first day when i have woken up and not looked any different (though my bruising is very extensive and now at its yellowest) which is also a bit depressing. Hang in there. and good luck with the exam (I admire you for studying - I can't hold concentration for the NY Times yet...), Hang on in there too, -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " ForgivenToo " <nicoletraxel@h...> wrote: > > , > > Glad to see you made it through ok! Guest guest
, I had upper surgery on November 16th and the congestion was the worst part. Something I found very useful was using q-tips soaked in a warm water and peroxide mixture to clean everything out. I did this a couple of times a day and especially before bedtime and it made things much easier. Good luck. > > > > I had upper. lower and genio on December 7. Guest guest
Thanks so much. I'm willing to try just about anything at this point. Yesterday was my best day since surgery, but last night was my worst night since surgery. Guest guest
Hang in there it does get better. I had my surgery on a Tuesday as well and the following Sunday was the absolute worst day. It has been getting better ever since. Getting proper nutrition also helps. Was hard for me at first because I am not really fond of sweets so the Ensure and instant breakfasts just about gagged me. After the first week my OS allowed me to take my bands off to eat which opened up a whole new menu. That was Thanksgiving week so I stuffed myself with mashed potatoes and dressing. You can make a lot of things " soft chew " with enough gravy, ha!ha!. Good luck and hopefully your worst day is behind you now. > > > > > > > > I had upper. lower and genio on December 7. Guest guest
Dani, Funny to hear you say you look forward to bands. I am just tightly banded shut now, and it's no picnic for sure. But it reminds me I am indeed fortunate. Nights are definitely harder than days. This has always been true for me. My mom has even called me a child of the light But its certainly very true these days! Hang in there...I'll be sending good thoughts at you and your surgeon on Thursday! Guest guest
Hey ! i had upper and lower and genio on the 8th too. I agree about the congestion. I also get choked pretty easy and my tongue is numb. As far as pain, I really haven't had any. Just those few annoying things. Sleeping elevated is not great either. Hey, just think, one week down and just a few to go. We are gonna make it! Casey > > > > I had upper. lower and genio on December 7. Surgery was long > > (8 hours) but seemed to please OS. Guest guest
, Let me ask you something. Do the bands bother a lot? i know they are not comfortable, but they must be better than the wires, 'cause they hurt my mouth a lot. Are you able to eat a little bit more. My doc said i'll be able to open my mouth a bit which is better than nothing. Can you give me some tips? Good news? Anything. thanks for the support I'll need it on Thursday. Guest guest
Hi Dani, I'm sure bands are a lot better than wires. Yeah, I can open my mouth a little bit. Not too far, but far enough to be able to use a cup and slurp some pretty thick soups(blended of course) into my mouth. As for pain from them, it only hurts when I talk for a long time, and I think that's from them pulling on my teeth when I talk. Although this new set I got today seem to be pinching my cheek more than the last ones I had. Not sure why that would be though! I'll have to post tomorrow about my OS visit from today cuz I'm feeling really run down right now....tomorrow will be better! > > > > > Dani, > > > > Funny to hear you say you look forward to bands. Guest guest
- I'm not crazy about Ensure, I think Boost is better (my doctor said more of his patients preferred it; it's not as chalky.) They have many flavors. I like the Chocolate Mocha best, but I think I remember you saying you didn't care for chocolate. My mom has blended fruit into the vanilla ones and they are pretty good too.The doc also said I could try some runny mashed potatoes and soups and stuff, but to be real honest, my tongue is too numb. I get choked on just about everything because I can't tell where it's at in my mouth. Are you having the same problem? thanks! C- > > > > > > > > I had upper. lower and genio on December 7.
