Guest guest
Hey all, Well, saw my OS this morning. Two weeks post op from upper only (segmented in three pieces). The new greatest concern is that my gums on one side where he segmented my jaw (cut between a couple teeth) are not coming back as well as he had hoped. So, that seems to be his biggest concern right now. He took out about half of my stitches (especially the ones near the gums he is concerned about) to see if that helps. So he plans to keep a close eye on that, meaning I go back in next Tuesday morning. Anyone else have this problem? Did it turn out ok in the end? Otherwise, he seems pleased. I'm sleeping well and adjusting to the liquid only diet. Still have my splint, and am still banded (although, I now have 6 bands instead of 8). He did say I should start changing the bands everyday, so I guess I have a new challenge to look forward to tomorrow! Although, that also means I can brush behind my teeth too, which will be very nice! But I still can't remove the bands to eat, so at least another week of the liquid only diet. I asked about the numbness. He said I should regain feeling in my nose this week, but the upper palate could take a while, even months! So I guess I'll be patiently waiting for that. I've been having some headaches in the afternoons/evenings, much like the TMJ headaches I used to get a lot. He said that's to be expected because my jaws are in new positions now, and muscles are adjusting. So, like you all already knew, moist heat is the key! Just some muscle tension, and like someone said yesterday, how can you not have tension when you're banded or wired??? Oh, and he said I can use a straw! So, I think today I'm going to attempt using a straw. I just don't think I have power over my lips yet to be able to do this, but I'm going to start practicing. One other question for all my great surgery buddies. Do you have any problems with your teeth being sensitive? My lower teeth in particular (upper ones are covered by a splint) are really sensitive to cold liquids. Any ideas on what could cause this or what I could do to make it better? Thanks everyone! Take care!

Guest guest
Hi , Yes, I too had/have sensitive teeth. It comes and goes. I've been rinsing with liquid fluoride. Fluoride is supposed to reduce temperature sensitivity. My orthodontist said it is from the pressure of teeth touching that hadn't touched before. It is annoying but I think I remember some other folks on this site mentioning the same complaint so I think it's a common occurence. I remember how wonderful it was to clean behind my teeth after the splint was removed! Every week brings new rewards. And yes, I too occasionally get the headaches. Once I release my jaw from the bands for a few minutes, they go away so I know it's just from the pressure in my TMJ Joints. It was dis-heartening the first time I had them because one of the reasons for doing this surgery was to get rid of debilitating migraines. But, these headaches are different and they are decreasing. I hope that yours will also. Best of luck! > > Hey all, > > Well, saw my OS this morning. Two weeks post op from upper only > (segmented in three pieces). Guest guest
Hey ! My teeth aren't sensitive yet, but I've heard from the OS that sensitivity after surgery is common and can last for quite a while. Glad to hear you are getting to remove the bands. I can't wait to get to brush my teeth on the inside. I see the OS on Thursday. Good luck with the gums healing. Sounds like a bummer, but I'm sure it will heal soon. Take care! -Casey > > Hey all, > > Well, saw my OS this morning. Two weeks post op from upper only > (segmented in three pieces). Guest guest
I saw my OS yesterday. She removed my heavy bands (I was never wired in the literal sense, though it sure felt like it) and replaced them with two small bands. I can remove them to eat and brush my teeth. I was so excited to get home and brush and eat something soft! It was a bit of a letdown though because I can barely open my mouth. It doesn't hurt, it just feels weird. I had to really force the baby toothbrush in there to get behind the teeth. Oh, and most of the mac-n-cheese ended up on my face. I'm not too disappointed since I know that this will get easier every day. Otherwise things look good. She was very impressed with my lack of swelling and bruising. She does think I have a slight infection in one of the implants (I have paranasal implants) so she has me taking Cleocin three times a day. This is the same stuff I had to have replaced on day 2 post-op because it was making me gag. Now I can take it in pill form so it's not too bad. I'm still having trouble sleeping, both falling asleep and staying asleep. She gave me a prescription for Restoril. So far I'm not impressed. I still couldn't fall and stay asleep last night. The most amazing thing my surgeon said yesterday was that I am cleared to go back to all activities, including running! I was floored; I'm not even two weeks post-op. The only thing she doesn't want me to do are inverted yoga poses. I'm not really ready to go back to running yet. I think I've got the energy but my new bite is still weird to me and the idea of jostling it while running freaks me out. Right now my teeth feel totally foreign to me. I am walking a lot and today I did the 4.6 mile route I usually run every morning. I think I'll just continue with the walking for the next couple of weeks, maybe throw in a few hikes here and there. I just want to enjoy the rest of my time off of work! > > Hey all, > > Well, saw my OS this morning. Two weeks post op from upper only > (segmented in three pieces). Guest guest
, Thanks so much for your reply! That is a great explanation for the sensitivity. I was worried there was something wrong, because my lower teeth are so sensitive, and they didn't even do anything to my lower jaw! But you're right on. My lower teeth have never touched anything, so it is new for them to be meeting the splint all the time now. It absolutely makes sense. And thanks so much for the reassurance about the headaches too. Like you, the main reason I had this surgery was to get rid of the headaches and pain, so you're right, it was very disheartening when they started happening again last week. I hope that, like you said, they are just from the bands, and once I am out of them or get used to them the headaches will go away. Fabulous! Thanks again..you've helped so much! Guest guest
Hey Maddie, I'm jealous you can go back to full activities! Yesterday was the first day I really had my " normal " activity level back, so I thought it was worth a shot to ask my OS if I could work out again. Well, that was a no for sure, but not so much because it would be harmful, more because it would burn calories. I've lost about 10 pounds thus far in the journey, and seem to have stabilized. But he said if I lose 15 pounds we'll start to worry. So, I'm trying to be sedentary, which is tough because normally I'm very active! Congrats though! Sounds like your recovery is going very well! > > > > Hey all, > > > > Well, saw my OS this morning. Two weeks post op from upper only > > (segmented in three pieces). Guest guest
Maddie - That is amazing that your OS said you're ready to run again. I can imagine all the pounding up and down must seem a little scary! Normally I go to aerobics classes about 5x/week. When I asked before surgery, my OS said I should be able to go back after 2 weeks (I'm 1 week and 1 day post-op so that would be next Tuesday). I thought I would really really miss excercising regularly and that it would be one of the hardest things to get used to not doing - but I have barely even thought of it. I think I am going to need some serious motivation when I'm allowed to get back to it. I am very impressed that you walked 4 1/2 miles today - that is inspirational for the rest of us--congratulations!!! > > > > > > Hey all, > > > > > > Well, saw my OS this morning. Guest guest
Dear , I am so glad that my reply relieved your mind. Isn't this site awesome? My husband should be nominated for sainthood, and I have fantastic friends but still, none of them can really understand what we are going through. It's such a relief to be able to find people who KNOW and understand what we've faced and undergone. Sorry to hear that you had headaches too but hopefully that will be a thing of the past. Have you had many people ask you if your headaches are gone yet? I have and I never know what to say. My headaches that I've had after the surgery (just a few) do feel different than my migraines but they are a pain. (sorry, bad pun!) I know this is silly but I almost feel like I would be disappointing everyone if I admitted that yes, I have had some headaches. Oh well. Everything else is great: my profile, my bite and my continued recovery so I'm trying not to worry about the headache situation. How are you doing with everything else? Take care, > > , > > Thanks so much for your reply! That is a great explanation for the > sensitivity. Guest guest
, This site is awesome! Surgery has shown me who my true friends are locally. I've had a couple surprises on who stood by me, and who laughed or tried to avoid conversations with me. But this site has been here through it all. I've been blessed with a number of surgery buddies, and comparing experiences has been so helpful! I actually have had people ask if I still have headaches. I'm honest with them, and say that I have, but I also try to give some alternative explanations for them. Which is easier to do now that I don't have so many doubts in my own mind about it! I'm doing quite well with everything else. I'm banded, with a splint wired to my upper jaw, so that creates eating and speaking challenges. My swelling is going down, but very slowly. But yesterday I had a couple firsts. I tried using a straw. It went ok, not as messy as I thought it would be, but that was hard work! Much easier to just drink out of the side of a cup, but at least I know I can do it if the situation presents itself. I also noticed while at a holiday party last night that my lips were closed!!! I didn't even have to make a conscious effort to close them, they were just resting that way! I was so excited!! My bruises have all disappeared. I've lost 10 pounds so far, and am trying to keep from losing any more. Being sedentary is hard work, but I would rather try to keep myself sitting still than try to think of one more thing I can blend up and drink in a day! And I am sleeping well. I noticed in another post you said you're not sleeping on your side yet. That was actually one of the first questions I asked my surgeon post op was if I could sleep on my side or on my stomach. Thankfully he said that was fine! I slept sitting up in a recliner for the first 6 days or so, but then went to bed (with two pillows), and have been sleeping in all my usual sleeping positions ever since. Thank goodness for that! Hopefully the day will come soon when you can sleep normally again! That has really made a big difference for me. Take care, and thanks again for your message
