I'm kicking myself and feel horrible about it, but after 2 weeks of

having nothing but chicken broth and milkshakes I guess I just went a

little crazy - I woke up this morning and had a slice of pizza and

some crackers. How much damage could I have done, and how serious of

a problem is this as long as I don't do anything stupid like this

anymore?

You're probably okay. But instead of limiting yourself to chicken

broth and milkshakes, try other things, like baked potato, fish, etc.

Those can be eaten without chewing (mash it against the roof of your

mouth and swallow), and are a lot more substantive and flavorful

broth/shakes.

Like said, you're probably okay, but I wouldn't make a habit

out of chewing just yet. From what my ortho told me, chewing too

soon inhibits the maximum fusion of your bones. The less fusion you

have, the more flexibility. The more flexibility, the easier your

bones could break. If your bones never achieve this, then you could

suffer problems on down the road.

Some of the foods I ate starting at two weeks included mashed

potatoes, Stove Top, cheesecake, tuna salad w/no veggies, oatmeal,

broccoli cheese soup from 's Deli (the broccoli was nice and

mushy!), cappellini pomodoro from the Olive Garden (I was desperate

to eat out!), mac & cheese where the noodles were slightly

overcooked, scrambled eggs, and refried beans with cheese. All of

these foods could be easily mushed up against the roof of my mouth,

and the risk of choking was minimal.

I had two upper/lower surgeries 5 weeks apart, and chewing wasn't an

option for over 10 weeks. I understand how desperate you may be to

get back to a normal diet, but give yourself time! It's really easy

to get ahead of ourselves, especially when we long for the foods we

can't have at the moment.

If you had done any damage you would know it. As everyone has said

try eating soft things you do not have to chew. Chilli was a good one

for me. Or mashed potatoes with cheese and green onions, and very

tiny bacon bits.
