Guest guest
For whatever it is worth, I weighed everything out (I too have extensive osteoarthritis with lots of spurs that are already impinging nerves along C-5 or so. I see a rhemutalogist (sp?) who is young, well educated and has my utmost respect and confidence (rare words coming from me for a medico). He and I talk about this surgery, my heart surgery and all the other things going on and I have decided to wing it with him. I miss a day or two of Bextra and pay the price. We do labs very often. I also know there are strong feelings within the group about this drug and I respect that. I would never encourage anyone to do what I do, or make a decision just because I made it. I am just sharing that I was faced with a similar situation and made a decision and telling you what it was. I take the Bextra in capsule form, but then again I take at least 35 or 40 other supplements in tablet, capsule, gelcap as well and my labs are all great. I have not witnessed any who have survived the journey if ya know what I mean. I also am aware that they may be dissolving in an area of the system that does not allow for max absorption as well, but bottom line for me is that I do the best that I can and I have to weigh costs, risks, etc., but in the end, the decision, as are all decisions affecting my body are mine. Finally, after long last I can see, and more importantly accept that responsibility and only wish that I had been able to assume it far earlier than this stage of my life. If something goes wrong with surgery, one of my meds, or my butt just falls off and clanks loudly on the sidewalk when I walk down it tomorrow,,,,,I will not blame anyone, any doctor or any drug. I just did the best I could under the circumstances at the time. In the meantime, I am going to have a good day, try and love those in my life, forgive the ones who need the stuff slapped right out of them and trust that in the end all will be well with them as well. I will say aloud to me this nite before I go to bed that I am doing the best that I can and that it is fine, wonderful and I am a good person and I will repeat it in the morning and do it as often as necessary during the day. Harmony might be more important to me now than conflict and sometimes I just think the balance scales have tipped and I need it more than the strife. Thank you God! Dan Slone Surgery 5/2/2000 Questions about Ginger and Bextra Hi family, Got two questions for you. I take Bextra for arthritis...I know some of you have strong opinions about these drugs, but for me, for now, I am taking it especially since I had my back Xray'd and the Dr. said I had bone spurs and lots of osteoarthrits.. I am upping the Calcium Citrate too. My question is....Are there any of these arthritis drugs that come in a transdermal patch? and if you have to take Bextra how to take it and protect the pouch? I am leaving this Friday for a birding trip to south Florida and we will be on a boat for three days going to and from the Dry Tortugas..my questions concerns sea sickness. I have the Rx patch but it doesn't work well for birdwatching...it can make you sleepy..and miss the birds? It can also make your eyes light sensitive..I forget if it dialates the pupils or constricts them? I have taken baby Drammine for a one day, but this is for 3 days.....a friend takes GINGER. Obviously I can't take candied ginger, she takes Ginger Ease..I can't find that brand here but I did find something called Ginger force...after I opened it....which means I can't return it...discovered it is in a gelcap.. If I remember correctly it passes through? and the gelcap doesn't dissolve...I bit into it and found out it is very bitter tasting, so this won't work. The tea won't work either....lots of bathroom trips and there is only one on board...and again I would miss the birds..... Someone help!!! Guest guest
but then again I take at least 35 or 40 > other supplements in tablet, capsule, gelcap as well I am wondering how many of you do this. I can't tell you what a royal " pain in the arse " is it for me to take any kind of med. I am scared to death of " gelcaps " or anything like it. When I was " researching " wls I came across a woman website that had taken Tylenol when she was a few weeks out and the gelcap didn't desolve and they had to reopen her and take it out of the stoma. Is this a freak occurence??? I would love to not have to sit here and remove gelcaps, crush pills and bury them in pudding for the rest of my life.....................PLEASE tell me their is hope!! Would it be better to take a Tylenol with or without the gelcap? P.

Guest guest
I have solved this problem in two ways. When I was first postop I bought Adult Liquid Tylenol at my drug store. It tastes nasty however, so now I order aceteminophen capsules from my pharmacist. Call your drug store and ask. They are much less expensive than name brand tylenol. Marjie I would love to not have to sit here and remove gelcaps, crush pills and bury them in pudding for the rest of my life.....................PLEASE tell me their is hope!! Guest guest
Good morning,, Re the gelcaps. I am a vbg'r but my doctors all tell me to use gelcaps. OTC and scripts...they try to get my meds in gelcaps. I don't know how this works for RNY'rs but I have had NO problems with this. Now some pills that have been prescribed have been the size of frisbees! I cannot swallow those so I need to be creative. My pharmacist is my friend! She tells me when I can buy a combination of supplements rather than take 2-3 'pills'. I hate taking pills! But I am the wierd one! Have a great day! Guest guest
I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the difference between a gelcap and a capsule needs to be clarified. A gelcap is a capsule surrounded by gel (as in Tylenol). It looks the same as a capsule. It is designed to be easier to swallow than a bare tablet. However, a capsule is a capsule filled with powder. My understanding is that capsules dissolve better than tablets or gel caps, and much easier to find. I can see how a pharmacist might make up capsules, but I'm not so sure about gel caps. Guest guest
you are so right! That is why we all need to read, investigate, and ask a lot of questions! Then do what we need to do for ourselves. You have made great choices and hopefully my choices will be as good for me. Thanks for all you do for this bunch. I know I have learned from you. Guest guest
Now........ I take the long narrow 'pills' with on color at one end and a different color at the other end and a band in the middle. Guest guest
Excuse the blank post...hit the wrong button! Anyway, I find it hard to fathom that they would open a person back up, just to remove a gel cap. A scope, yes, but a major surgery? Hmmm...doesn't sound plausible to me....the freak occurrence would be the surgery itself. Regards~ Jacque Distal RNY, 5/30/00 Drs. Fox and Oh 310~126 Beginning BMI 50.0 Current BMI 20.3 had taken Tylenol when she was a few weeks out and the gelcap didn't desolve and they had to reopen her and take it out of the stoma. Is this a freak occurence???

Guest guest
>>PLEASE tell me their is hope!! Would it be better > to take a Tylenol with or without the gelcap? P. I think she has a freak occurrence. I started taking capsules pretty early out (6 weeks or less), and have taken them ever since. I take vitamins, Tylenol, sinus headache medicine when I need it, cold capsules when I need them, all in gelatin capsules or in the coated gelcaps. Never had a problem with any of them. The only reason I use chewable vitamins is that I expect I get more nutrition out of them than I would the hard kind. ~~ Lyn G

Guest guest
Thanks for the explanation Barbara.....I did need it....of course once you explained it, it seemed obvious!! I think I would still be scared to death to take either one of them.......but maybe some day!! Thanks again, P.
