Guest guest
At a face-to-face WLS support group meeting last night, the issue of accountability came up. I, and others, agreed that some source of accountability is necessary for our weight loss to be a success. No man is an island, and I know that *I* can lie to myself if it's just me in the journey. So, I got ambitious this morning (ack!) and started up a new yahoo group called " WLSaccountability " . Below is the description of the group, as well as the links to get to it. If you feel that this might be something you need, feel free to join; if you don't think it is, or you feel it is duplicating what is out there, just disregard this message. This is in no way an attempt to replace this group-I just think that the more detailed accountability some of us (ok, myself) need is difficult to provide in a group that has people with SO many different needs, or who are in completely different stages of recovery, or just don't have the complex issues with food that some of us (ok, once again, myself) have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Home page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WLSaccountability Description " This is a place for people who are past the " honeymoon " stage of weight loss, and are now realizing that their eating habits are sabotaging success. Members acknowledge they need a place where they can gain some accountability for eating habits. How much accountability each member gets is up to them, however! Members are strongly encouraged to post at least 1x/ week, and can freely post meal plans/ food choices, as well as exercise methods/ amounts and struggles/ " head " issues. As the group becomes larger, members can find e-mail buddies to further improve accountability. We recognize that although this surgery provides us with (relatively) easy weight loss and a " tool " to maintain that loss, how we use the tool is up to us. It's stomach surgery, not HEAD surgery! Success lies within, although some of us need a bit of a " push " via accountability to do what we know is " right " . We support all " diet " / food plan choices that are nutritionally sound and meet the needs of WLS patients. We recognize what may work for one person may not work for another. However, if a member is obviously sabotaging their WLS (either through eating excessively, snacking, avoiding exercise, etc.), this is NOT a group that will condone this behavior. In too many other groups, this behavior is ignored or swept under the rug, which is unfair to the person who needs help! Group members realize that sometimes loving one another means that you have to (gently) disagree with someone/ express concern. It is through interactions of this sort with others that we can recognize bad behavior that we may have otherwise ignored. That said, this is NOT a group that will condone flaming, telling members that they are " bad " people for their choices, browbeat members until they agree with " our " food plan, etc. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. If a member is straying from a healthy lifestyle, members should point out the behavior, and then offer encouragement without judgement. " ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ~* D.*~ post-op, 08/23/01 Starting: 354 lbs. size 28 stretch pants, 3x shirts/ pj's. Current: 161 lbs. size 10 pants, medium shirts, small pj's. Total pounds gone: 193 lbs.!

Guest guest
You know, I am glad you started this group for those who want that level of accountability, but for me, bottom line, it's nobody's damn business what I weigh. After years of being nagged by all kinds of people (including an EX-husband) over every crumb that went in my mouth and every pound gained, I am accountable to me and me alone now. I think that's why I'm succeeding. :-) I started a big WLS support group and have seen it all, from people who do not want to even share a ballpark estimate of the number of pounds that they've lost, all the way to food-cops who are ready to point out every instance of " cheating " , shaming people in front of the whole group (behavior I stopped because I consider it unacceptable in a community of mutually-respecting adults). I do CHOOSE to share extensive weight information on my AMOS profile for its inspirational value to me and others. Look out if you say anything negative to me about it though! Guest guest
, Congratulations on discovering a need and fullfilling it. I wish you much success. I, for one, am much better being accountable in a person-to-person type situation then a group type thing. I find it too easy to justify to a group. But it sounds like there is a need for atleast some of us for this kind of group. Lori Owen - Denton, Texas CHF 4/14/01 479 lbs. SRVG 7/16/01 401 lbs.
