Guest guest
Sorry guys, I have tried searching around about this a little bit and have not found the answers I feel like I need, so I am asking you guys. I know there has been a lot of discussion about iron on here and apologies in advance if this has been repeated on here before. My Ferritin level is down to 5 and all I do is sleep or walk around like a zombie wanting to sleep. My PCP has little experience with WLS patients and flat out told me he wasn't sure what to do with me since I had WLS and his advice to take iron pills had done nothing but reduce my ferritin from a 10 to a 5 in 60 days. I decided to check with the bariatric program dietician at the hospital where I had surgery. She said that I should try Nu-Iron liquid Elixir. She stated it was elemental iron, sugar free and would not upset the gastric system. I called my pharmacy and they said that the manufacturer had discontinued this product entirely but Niforax (sp??) was an identical product and came in liquid form. Does anyone know anything about this and is it true? I know that some of you had to have iron infusions and I wanted to know if you tried the elixir/liquid irons before you did the infusions. I am assuming you did and the elixir did not work which of course already has me worried that this won't work for me either. I was spooked and depressed that my iron dropped that much in 60 days considering I have been pumping the iron pills, avoiding calcium within 2 hours of taking the iron, taking Vit C with the iron and trying to eat red meat all the time. Guest guest
An excellent form of iron supplementation is iron amino acid chelate. THis is the supplement form used in prenatal vitamins because the iron in it is very easily passed through to the fetus. THe iron amino acid chelate molecule is so small, it is a dipeptide molecule, that it does not need to be broken down by digestive action to be able to be absorbed. Two of the bariatric supplement vendors use iron amino acid chelate in their products. They are http://www.vistavitamins.com and http://www.bariatricsupplementsystem.com If you want an iron supplement that is not in a multivitamin form, then try SOLGAR GENTLE IRON KOSHER VEGICAPS at http://www.vitacost.com/Store/Products/ProductDescription.cfm?SKUNumber=03398401\ 2509 The iron is stated to be in Iron Bisglycinate form. That is just the trade name for the iron amino acid chelate made by Albion Labs.
