My daughter did, 1 pint, as far I know it is not reimbursed on your

insurance. She didn't have to use it but it gave her peace of mind.

Donating Blood for surgery?

Did any of you donate blood for your surgery? If so, how much?

I think I might have to.

I just had upper and lower jaw surgery on Dec. 20th and I had to

donate two pints before hand. However, I am a small person (only

120 lbs) and they were concerned about the amount of blood loss I

would have with both jaws. Fortunately they didn't have to give any

of it back to me.

Hope this helps,

I donated 2 units of RBC and needed them both. It's actually pretty

rare to need blood for orthognathic surgery, though.

I tried to donate for my surgery but had a reaction during the finger

prick test where they check your iron. I became incredibly light

headed and felt faint. I found this odd because I have donate blood

before and have pretty much gotten over my fear of needles completely.

I have tattoos, and have experienced some severe physical trauma so

this reaction was really odd to me.

They told me at the Red Cross donation center that this happens with

athletic males from time to time. I felt fine within a few minutes and

told them I was fine but they refused to allow me to donate and it was

to close to my surgery date to donate safely.

Even if you dread the idea of giving blood you really should. While

the chance of contracting HIV or hepatitis from a blood transfusion are

very slim the only way to be sure is to use your own blood during

surgery. Risking disease transmission during an elective surgical

procedure is simply silly so don't let fear keep you from donating.

An interesting note is that if you do not need your blood for surgery

it is destroyed! I was shocked to hear that at first but when I

researched it the screening required on donated blood costs about $325

a pint. Since you are donating for yourself they do not bother to

screen it.

Well that was probably alot more than anyone wanted to hear but I am on

a vicodin rant. Who says this procedure can't bee fun?

Peace, Love, and Happiness.

I donated 2 units of blood for my surgery (upper/lower/genio). I

ended up losing 1.2 L of blood during surgery, so it was very good

that I had 2 units (500 mL each) to transfuse back to me. However,

my case was unusual--most people doing upper and lower lose about

400 mL.
