Guest guest
Well,,re the celery and fiber things consumed - again I guess it is just me or my version of this surgery (horizontal pouch using greater curvature of the stomach) but I also got a similar warning in our program bible (our nutrition manual) but I am not sure that much of that book ever applied to me in retrospect! Right from the time when I first started expanding the menu, about the nine - twelve month mark, I found that I could eat anything, take any form of medicine, liquid, caplets, tablets, gelcaps, and just about drink in any volume of fluid that I wanted. I remember some slight restriction when I started to drink a lot of water but honestly I did not push my envelope at all until some nine months post so if the restrictions where there they were not tested. It tends to make me think I never had a whole lot of restriction to begin with, but who knows? I know that I never yakked and I could eat railroad spikes if I wanted,,,,,never the first problem with any type of food. So the good advice I got about avoiding celery just did not fit my case as it turned out. But then again I was told other things that also have not held the test of time as well. I was told that I did not need to take Iron as I was not a female still having " cycles. " LOL, now this may apply to you as well here so pay attention! Mother always banged me on the head about Iron and Dexascans, etc and since I am a proximal proximal, 75cm, I did not really think it was a serious issue for me but I always said yes that I would do it. Finally I did it, this past Monday. Last night when I got home there was a msg waiting from my PCP. Seems that the spine is okay, but he wants me to do another scan in a year cause there is some " mild beginnings of osteopennia (sp?) in the hips. Well!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guess what? The right hip is the one that keeps me in agony unmedicated and the one that propelled me to Bextra and pain meds. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Now I do not have the report in hand yet so I cannot discuss numbers. I also have a rheumatoligist (sp?) so I am gonna get a copy of the report and take it to have a chat with him since he is doing the hip treatment. I think I mentioned the Iron issue the other recently but I track my labs and have since the start based on good advice from and others. I have them on a spread sheet. My last Ferritin reading was 26 and when I review the numbers over a three year period there has been a distinct and steady drop from 279 as I recall to the latest. Now when I had my scheduled annual physical in February or March,,,I discussed this drop with my PCP who did not seem one whit concerned about it and said that it was probably a result of the open heart surgery I had six months back. Well,,,,,that can and does happen I know, but , my numbers were on the down slope for two years before that surgery,,,,,,hmmmmmmmmm. Now,,,,,,where do ya think all that Iron is going that I consume in food? Right through! Obviously! So the surgery that I had which was not supposed to have malabsorption as a major factor obviously does! I would not be aware of all these things had I not been given good guidance from those who have trod this path ahead of me! So men can and do get into bone trouble after surgery. Men can and do get into mineral depletion status after surgery and I am not seeing a great deal of difference in my shorter version and the horizontal pouch construction in comparison to more distals. Maybe I woulda gotten into trouble faster, I dunno! I rush to say here that since probably the six month (or before) mark, I have religiously taken calcium citrate and all the goodies that are needed to absorb it and have even done the mega capsules for the last 18 months four times daily. If there has been anyone compliant with calcium, it is I Lord! What all this means to me is that I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn so very much from all of you who so freely share. I am reluctant to consider where I might be had I just had this surgery and gone off whistling in the dark and not being aware of the need to be my own health care manager and assume responsibility. I am just still in a bit of shock that I find myself contemplating bone degeneration or prevention thereof. I am not gonna worry a great deal about this at this point and intend to get the report and discuss it with the bone doc and then decide what direction to take.
