Guest guest
Hi everyone. I need some experienced input again. Within the past few weeks I had a cat scan which showed a SLD and a hernia. My original surgeon wanted to fix the hernia but stated to fix the SLD was too dangerous. He also said I had 12 rows of staples. He scheduled surgery for April 30th. (Hmmm... I think I need a second opinion!) Last week I saw another surgeon. I explained I had RNY January of 02, that I was having stomach pain, and handed him the copy of the cat scan's films and written report. That was it. I did not want to influence him in any direction because I wanted HIS opinion. In a nutshell, I was very impressed and comfortable. He said it was more important to fix the SLD because when a hernia is fixed, mesh is put in your body which is a foreign body. If the mesh ever becomes infected it will mess up the stomach and the stomach can never be repaired. He also will remove part of the intestine to try to fix the hernia. The hernia has a 65% chance of repair. He stated worse case scenario is that a year from now he will repair the hernia laprascopicaly. To me this sounds like a plan. I asked about the 12 rows of staples. From everyones responses this is pretty uncommon. He explained about the different type of staplers that surgeons use. He was not happy with mine. He uses a new one that he feels is much safer. I can not remember the name of it but it transects the stomach. This is where I'm getting a little squeamish. If there are 4 holes in there now, what would happen if this happened again? Has anyone else had their stomach cut in half? Also, what are some of causes SLD? If anyone has had this revision would you please email me and let me know how recovery was? One last question. Would going on heavy duty protien shakes before surgery (May 5th) increase my body's ability to heal? Thank you sooooooooo much! Cheri MagicCheri@... Guest guest
Hi Cheri, Quite a few of us have had SLD's. One surgeon explained to me that sometimes the stomach tissue just rejects the staples. He said that the body is actually doing what it's supposed to by rejecting a foreign object. Makes sense, doesn't it? It's definitely not your fault. As for recovery, I originally had an open RNY, then a year later I was able to be transected laparoscopically (by Dr Gagner, the best in the Northeast), did my standard 3-day hospital stay, went home, and spent the next day at the mall. It was such an easy recovery, in part because it was lap, but also because we're not newbies anymore, we know what to expect, we know there's life after WLS. And, yes, going on protein shakes before surgery will definitely help. Also, I would definitely go with the 2nd doc, but you already know that. Any reason you couldn't have a TT at the same time as hernia repair, if you want one, next year? Good luck, hon, we're here for you. in NJ ********************************** > Has anyone else had their stomach cut in half? Guest guest
I had SLD in 99 at 5 yrs post-op. By the time I got thru insurance games, it was 1/2000. 1. I had 4 rows, oversewn, originally (1994) 2. Normally, they woulda transected (my doc started doing 'em all that way '96), but I preferred to be resected---remove lower stomach. It had done nothing but made ulcers for 30 yrs. This was my chance to get rid of it on purpose, rather than waiting til another ulcer got it. Doc was not thrilled, but I produced that ulcer history, so he did it. So, remember, I chose it. Besides, I figured if my body had rejected the staples once, the pouch might get lonely & form a fistula to find its old buddy. It'd happen to ME, just cuz. I'm not recommending this to anyone else, of course, cuz you'd have to have my history & my particular mind-set (a frightening thought) 3. I was already healthy, only regained 12#, but had 4 months to take a ton of extra protein, extra vit C, took extra vit E up til the week before, made sure my iron was better than mid-range. Except for the fatigue (naps), I pretty much walked thru it unscathed. (OK, it did hurt some. LOL!) 4. I'm a firm believer in pre-loading. The difference in peoples' recovery is remarkable, to which I add my own recovery Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
Those of us who have had the DS have had our stomachs cut in half (actually in about 4/5 - 1/5), but vertically, not transversely, and the 4/5 part removed. I sure do not miss that 4/5-ths of a stomach. And, I never leaked (well, at least not from the remaining stomach). --Steve At 1:21 PM -0400 4/17/03, MagicCheri@... wrote: >Has anyone else had their stomach cut in half? -- Steve Goldstein, age 63 Lap BPD/DS on May 2, 2001 Dr. Elariny, INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Virginia Starting (05/02/01) BMI = 51 BMI on 08/04/02 = 35 (-105 lb.)
