Guest guest
Hi it is again, In about 5 hours I will oficially be a week out of surgery on my upper and lower jaw. Yesterday I complained that I couldn't eat and now I cannot sleep at all. I am beginning to think that I should get cable so that more than one station has programming at 3 am. I am not sure if it is the sleeping at 30 degrees, but if anyone has any suggestions for how to sleep better I would appreciate it. I am tired, I just can't ever sleep. Thanks, HappyD

Guest guest
Hi , I remember the insomnia very well, and one week post op was my limit for that. I went to my OS for my one week post op appointment and I was so upset. He suggested I try 2 tsp of hydrocodone (the pain med he prescribed) before bed. That worked great! That was also the first night I slept in my own bed instead of on a recliner, so it could certainly be sleeping at the angle that is keeping you up at night. I asked my OS if I could sleep normally, on my stomach or side, and in my bed and he said that was fine. He actually said it was fine as soon as the day after surgery, but congestion kept me upright for the first week. My OS also prescribed Ambien (a sleep med) at my one week post op appointment, so I could use that just in case the hydrocodone didn't work. I never had to use it, but it was a great back up plan. Good luck...hang in there! I'm three weeks post op, and the difference in how I looked and felt from week one to week two was dramatic, so don't give up hope yet on going back to teaching next week! > > Hi it is again, > > In about 5 hours I will oficially be a week out of surgery on my > upper and lower jaw. Guest guest
Try taking one or two benadryl, unless you have a condition that rules it out. they're pretty soporific. Take 'em at bedtime, and they may help. Don't mix them with other antihistamines, though. Guest guest
Hi . Congratulations on making it to the one week mark! Insomnia was my chief complaint after my upper/lower surgery in March. We finally figured out that it was the major decongestants that I was taking for the head congestion (my second biggest complaint). Once I got off the decongestant pills and stuck with the decongestant spray, I was able to sleep. I think not being able to breathe through my nose made sleeping hard too. I suspect your problem will go away soon, but I sure sympathize--there's nothing worse than being exhausted but unable to sleep. Best of luck! --Amy > > Hi it is again, > > In about 5 hours I will oficially be a week out of surgery on my > upper and lower jaw. Guest guest
Hi , Are you still taking pain meds? Because I had major insomnia and that's what did it to me...I nearly went crazy...strange thing is that I was on T3 (tylenol and codiene) and had taken that many times before...and was always fine. This time was different. I was on vicodin at first then moved to t3...I was fine on the vicodin, then I started only being able to sleep in naps...like 1 hr at a time...then up for 2--3 then one hr or 30 mins and oh my god..the dreams!!!! Holy cow. The last nt I took it, I took a little bit before I " went to sleep " and I was off again...little sleep-wacky intense dreams, then AWAKE...again and again through the night...come about 5:30am, I awoke to feeling like bugs were actually crawling on me, to the point that even though I knew it was not real, I had to go into the other room, hit the big light and check it out to be sure I just hadn't lost it! I was a-ok. But the feelings...oh not fun. So, I sat up...wrote out the dream to get rid of it and waited to fall asleep again. About 7 something I crashed out...and slept til 12!!! 5 hrs, I was thrilled. Never went back on it and slept better every time after. I was not the only one to have that happen either, so check out all aspects and also, keep it light, but if you feel stable on your feet, try to get a little exercise-even a short walk...helps to get the toxins out quicker and the steriods and is good to get a little tired to " help you sleep " . Hope this helps some and try to remain calm...I know you REALLY want to nod off, but sometimes the more you want something like this, the harder it seems to achieve. So just relax-take a hot bath, read, grab some warm milk? and most of all, hang in there, this too shall pass!!!
